Thanks Mixtli but I was looking for something a little more specific, regarding brands, prices, places to buy them, etc. I'm glad that a walmart bike worked well for you, but I would like something a little better. A good lock is an obvious purchase I will make if I decide to do this. There are always plenty of places to lock up a bike even without a rack.
Obviously I am not familiar with Baltimore, but see if you can find a bike shop in town and check out what they have. Some places might even offer used bikes, which would be a good route to go.

I just used google and came up with these two places: http://www.luthervillebikeshop.com/

http://www.mtwashingtonbikes.com/

That is where I would start. If Todd was in town I would ask him, since he knows more about bikes than I do, but alas - he is gone for a few days.
When you get a bike and look for a lock, get a u-lock instead of a chain.

I will be attending. Just found a temporary apt in Fells Point (area is nice but pricey). I will be two blocks from Eastern Ave, and I was told a bus runs along Eastern to the school. I'll probably do that until I figure out the parking. I am also looking into buying a townhouse.

Does anyone know the actual number of hours per day that we will be in class for psp?

nice...... new psp list!

deepyboo
LadyWolverine
solacecomes
SpeedRacer
gonadotropins
Dr. Mario
DiegoT

no idea about the hours per day...i'm guessing we'll be out around early afternoonish?

That one looks like a birthday clown gone bad. I think the first one you posted is still scarier.

Tru dat, yo. However, some of the combos you get when you play with it can be creepy. More child-molester creepy or missing-a-few-crayons-from-the-crayon-box creepy, rather than clown-that-will-eat-you creepy.

I feel so upstaged now! What kind of creepy clown am I?

Holy crap, are we gonna really have 200 folks in our class? 😱 Oh well, the more the merrier!!

I just realized that none of you guys that I've already met are doing the PSP. I guess I'll be starting from scratch! I've been slacking on the list, too. Guess I'd better pay some more attention to my duties! 🙂

LS and I have started a homeowner's club. SQ is an honorary member. We will meet at the bar every Friday night after class to bitch about mortgages and repairs and the like. Man, I have to buy a LAWN MOWER. Apparently grass actually grows somewhere in Baltimore, and it happens to be my backyard. And it grows like a weed. And if I don't cut it, the city will fine me. WTF have I gotten myself into? More like, LS, WTF has your husband gotten me into? 😉

LOL. Sometimes I think the exact same thing - what HAS my husband gotten me into? I do not think I will sleep well until this whole thing is done, we have appliances that are hooked up and functional, and we make our first mortgage payment.

You should get a pet goat...that'll take care of the grass problem. Although, now that I think about it, they're probably not allowed within city limits.

Also, holy crap with the 200 students. That would be a huge med school class. In the MSAR I have it listed the class size at 150, but I guess if you overaccept and people don't withdraw then anything is possible. I guess I'm surprised that med schools overaccept in the first place, because it seems like it would pose problems in certain classes (anatomy for example).

I remember it was like that last year, which is why there is so little waitlist movement. We will not have a class of 200 students. The school stats on the website says there are 606 med students nand 36 MD/PhD, so classes may have a couple more than 150, but not by much. I know that they will offer deferrals to some students who have been accepted (not force, but offer) if they are really really in trouble. I don't think we ought to worry too much. Given the stats on the website, it'll get down to manageable levels by the time we matriculate. Schools have way too much experience to oversubscribe their classes by 50 students. They have ways of getting it adjusted.

I'd go to a place like REI and tell them exactly what you are looking for, that would probably be your best bet and you could get a bike for a couple hundred dollars, much less than $1000. They are probably also having a sale this weekend it being memorial day and all...definitely worth a shot.

OK, my saga is officially over - I withdrew from everywhere but UMD. Hooray! 😉
Congratulations! A little past the deadline, but better late then never, right? 😉

So, anybody have cool memorial day plans? I wish I did, but I have to play at a wedding. It wouldn't be so bad except that it is outdoors, and it is supposed to be 90 degrees and sunny. Neither my violin nor my fair skin will tolerate that very well. 😉

So...who gets to do something fun? Let me live vicariously through you!

We're in Jersey visiting Greg's parents. His brother and sister-in-law and nephew are up here too, which is nice since we hardly get to see them. We're having a family BBQ today and celebrating the 30 years Greg's dad has been an ordained minister. Just a pretty chill weekend, but sweet just the same.

24 lectures ~ 300 pages of syllabus text for my final neuro exam on tuesday. I'm on the 5th lecture now...yes! Oh yeah, after this 3 hour exam I get to take a neuro lab exam. I'm still going to BBQ tonight.

Ok...that's way worse than mine. You'd better enjoy every moment of that BBQ, I guess.

OK, so I just had a mild episode, when I realized that I didn't know where the fawk I was supposed to go tomorrow morning. For anyone else doing the PSP, here's the info:

Breakfast is at 9 am in the 3rd floor conference room of the MSTF. That's room 321. The address for the MSTF (Medical Sci Teaching Facility, I think) is 685 Baltimore Street. If you are driving (as I think I will do), you can park at the Lexington Garage for $4, if you let them know that you are a new student. The Lexington Garage is located at Pine & Lexington Streets. Be at the MSTF room NO LATER THAN 9AM! We have a panel discussion at 9, and then a real live lecture at 10am, so don't be late! Of course, I will probably be late. So don't listen to me.

Hope this helps save someone else from freaking out.

🙂

PS So far I've bought a dresser, a fridge, a bed, a washer/dryer, 3 floor lamps, 2 bookcases, and a partridge in a pear tree. I'm only set back about $2500 for it all. My bed is SOOOOOOO nice, it's a Serta! I want a free stuffed sheep! They are so cute!

And SQ, I told my sister what you said about the goat, and she flipped! The two of us are obsessed with goats. Not in an inappropriate way, mind you, but she volunteers with them at the zoo and we have come to accept them as part of our goatly family. I have actually considered having a goat - they make great pets, and yes, they would keep my grass short. But you have to get 2 because they are social animals. I dunno where I would keep them when they weren't outside. Build them a barn? In my backyard?

Actually I think breakfast is at 8AM in MSTF rm 321 (same room) and then we have 9AM orientation panel.

Now for all you PSPers...I expect a full report of how your first day went. 😛

first day was cool. they had a breakfast for us to meet each other (sorta) and then the student teachers all told us to not get behind 7 different ways. we had two lectures and then got a tour in the very hot and humid heat outside. we got badges with our sweatiness, and that's about it!

anyone know how the heck to get back to the "pods" tomorrow? is it in howard hall or mstf again? i don't remember how we got there!

that's all you got? .... weak.

wow after finishing 6 hours of neuro examinations i am happy to not be learning for the next few weeks. Hopefully I will have enough time to get so bored and slow this summer that I will be ready when Aug 10th rolls around.

so how did you do, mr. kestler?? inquiring minds..

I'm pretty confident I passed, though I don't think I did much better than that. It really comes down to the class, last exam the ****ing medical school class was on steroids and had an 84 average. a$sholes. I'm hoping they also had no motivation and will lower the mean as well as increasing the standard deviation so I can slide by. Still waiting to see. There grading scale is kinda weird, it goes A, B, C, FAIL. and basically top few % get As, everyone else gets a B, bottom 10% get Cs, the rest fail. Last year I heard based on the neuro final a 61 was a C and a 58 was an F. I heard a few kids didn't graduate 😱. No graduate means no degree, no degree means no medical school in fall 👎 👎 👎 👎 👎 👎

Well...I'll certainly keep my fingers crossed that you pass with flying colors. :luck: :luck:
When will you find out?

they should have posted a key by now.

does anyone know how to set up the umaryland email to download messages onto outlook or something?

Probably because only the PSPers have them (at least that's what I think is going on). The rest of us slobs will probably have to wait until orientation. 🙂

dumb question, have we had to put down a deposit yet? I mean other than replying yes to the acceptance and signing a couple forms, I don't think I've actually sent any money in, my parents started flipping on me when I told them this?

Hehe. No worries, tell the 'rents to breathe. My aunt had the same reaction, but it's fine. UMD does NOT require a deposit. You just need to make sure all your transcripts are in by July 1st.

I keep forgetting to request a transcript from the community college I took classes from during my senior year of high school. I really need to get on top of things. It seems silly, though, since all of the courses are listed on my transcript from my current university, but rules are rules.

ok, just talked to the office. Forgot to get a transcript from a CC too. We will apparently be receiving a medical education packet in the main in early July, around the 4th.

yeah, i hate paperwork like this, michigan needed transcripts for all my work from other schools and verified it as legit, then put it in their official transcript for me, you think that i could then just send that and it woudl be fine...so much wasted paper and time....

Hey - sorry I've been gone for so long. Been planning a party for my fiance and doing all sorts of cleaning and what not.

I have not seen the kid that designed the email but I will try emailing him and see if he still has the webpage.

As far as your email and what not. Don't worry, you will get all of that during orientation. For those of you not doing PSP ... take all this time to just chill and relax. You will be working like a dog in a few months (do you guys start in August???) You will be prepared to start and will be nice and fresh. I spent the whole summer chilling by the pool and working the MINIMAL amount of time so I could have just enough money to go out and party as much as possible.

The pods are in Howard Hall - it is between MSTF and Bressler. It all seems very overwhelming at first but, after some time you will learn your way around the maze of classrooms, pods and lecture halls. You guys should be thankful that you have a brand spankin new lecture hall. The crap hole they used to make us learn in was dark and dingy and really depressing. We were the last class to suffer with that lecture hall ... I guess they are making up for it with the bicenntenial celebrations next year when we graduate (gosh, it can't come fast enough).

Hope PSP is fun and that you are still finding time to hit up all the wonderful happy hours around B-more 😉

Thanks for the info, loveumms.

And on a side note, I finally sent in the form to get my transcript from the community college. Woot woot. I'll probably drop the admissions office a line in a few weeks just to make sure they got everything. Is there anything else I need to do to make everything official, or is that it?

Nope, that's it. Maryland seems pretty non stress so far 😉

I am kind of scared of the fact that we haven't heard from anyone doing the freaking PSP yet! Geez!

A sign of what's to come, eh?

Greg spoke with LW the other day and reported that she said to tell me to "start studying anatomy like you've never studied before." Now, since everyone and their brother has been telling us to NOT study this summer, I'm going to write it off as first week of PSP stress. But it probably tells us a lot about her state of mind right now.
