I just got a letter asking me to a reception at U. of Maryland - it did not specifically say "interview." And it's at a hotel instead of at the dental school. Did anyone else get this? Do they conduct all interviews this way, or is this for their second tier applicants or something?

worried and surprised 😕

Oh, also the secondary app came with the letter. It seems like other ppl who interviewed at Maryland got their secondaries before an invite letter. So is what I received not an interview at all?

chicken of the sea: is this chicken or tuna?

I believe it's not an interview. When you get one, you will know.

Good luck.

oh my gaw 😳
I guess you're right. The letter was very praise-y, but if they were giving me an interview, they'd say so. I guess i'll call and ask what it means for my application.

when is this reception? also are you from the state?

nov 18. not in-state

Im not really sure what the deal with that reception is? I do know when i scheduled my interview weeks ago that they had very few spots open before Dec 1st to chose from.

This is a "new event" so I don't think anyone knows what it is. Has Maryland been conducting normal interviews so far this year?

I'm not sure whats been happening with UMD.. all I know is that my interview is Tues Oct 25th (in 2 days). Has anyone interviewed there yet?

I've decided it must be a good thing if the school is going to the trouble of holding it in a hotel and hiring buses to take us to the school for the tour. Why would they go to all the extra expense if they were blowing us off with a non-interview?

I actually got that letter over the weekend, too, and I was wondering the exact same thing as you 🙂 What do you think the chances are that they will make people fly out for this reception AND fly out again for an interview later? I don't think they'd do that...I'm hoping that this reception will be in lieu of the normal interview 😀

Haha, that would suck. I don't think they'd do that to us. But I'm calling tomorrow to find out what the deal is.

let me know what they say! I'd love to know as well! :luck:

hey everyone,
I got the same letter about the reception. did you all receive the secondary with the letter? (assuming you haven't yet received one with an interview invite)

hope you meet you guys there!

Yep, it's an interview!

Have you looked at the plan for that day? They're all speeches, and no time for personal interviews. 😕

But I am so happy I heard from UMD! It's my top choice! 😍

I haven't, but I see that as a good thing too. Maybe we're so close to being in, they're only worried about impressing us?

Thanks for the confirmation. That's very smooth 🙂 I'll see you two on the 18th then!

Normal interviews are at the dental school. The first day of interviews were on Oct. 25. The interview was with a professor and a upper-level student. A tour was given of the NEW school (you have to wear a hard hat still, but it's going to be beautiful!). The typical interview day starts at 8:30am and runs till 1:30pm. It was definitely not in a hotel.

hmm, maybe these interviews outside of campus grounds are for those out-of-staters? I just received an email about attending this alumni reception too. I'm in Jersey. interesting...

i got an email today inviting me to an alumni reception in NYC on 11./29/05 with no attached secondary. hmm, i am a little confused. i guess it is just a way to meet the faculty maybe? dont know... did anyone else get the nyc one?

This hotel reception is a new event, according to the letter. And when I asked, they said it was definitely an interview. I have no idea what this alumni reception is ... it seems different from the letter I got. I guess Maryland is being creative this year!

Guys who got the NYC reception thing what are your stats? I am wonderinf if they sent this to everyone or not. My friend who has like a 3.0 GPA and 17 AA did not get it?? Also Jessica where do you live?

I'm out of state too.

Out of state where? I am just wondering if you're closer to MD or NY?

I'm kind of curious about this alumni reception - what does the letter say?

I got the reception letter and I had an interview invite as well.

i got it too w/ no secondary. How can it be an interview if its only from 6-8PM? This is so weird.

it's only from 6-8PM? Hmm. What are we talking about here? Reception in NYC?

i just spoke to them on the phone and for the NYC event, it is NOT an interview. She said it was just a good opportunity to show interest in the school and ask qs and get to know the faculty.

Same here - just called also. Def not an interview. She said they sent it to people from the area who may be interested in going.

WHAT?? that's crajeee!! 😕 so point of this interview is to tell them "yes we really were interested when we paid $$ applying to your school..." 😳 boooooooo.

Almost sounds like they are trying to recruit students for a big class next year

I got an interview invite on an earlier date, but I was e-mailed the reception as well. Sorry for the confusion. I just thought only people who had interviews were invited.

I'm from NYC area, I got interview invite, but not this reception thingie. I wonder what the criteria is for being invited to this reception.

SO about this NY alumni reception -- I have anatomy lab (only my 2nd class). Do I really want to miss it for this ? Its only two hours long. Do you think we are really going to get to talk to anyone? oyyy I just don't want it to hurt my chances. what to do....

My interview's on 11/22, at the school.

can we please start another thread about the NYU reception instead of posting under the Maryland thread? thanks.

is your "start new thread" button broken? 🙄

What's up with this reception thing?

I'm a little confused. I have an interview that's tomorrow at the school (but I didn't get an invite to the reception thing), so what's the difference between that and the reception?

Anyone know which one is better? 😕

As far as I can tell, there is an alumni reception which is just to meet with people and a reception in Baltimore which is an interview.

Good luck to everyone regardless of where these meeting take us!

I didn't bother starting a new thread because I didn't have anything to say about the NYU reception.

Sorry, but I'm also kinda new to this posting thing.
