nope,
have you heard anything about interviews?

maybe a dental school 'building', not dental school..?

Yes, it's a new building - not a new school. It should be completed sometime this year and, from what I saw when I was there interviewing, it should be a pretty impressive structure.

I interviewed there last year and they said that the building would be done by the beginning of 2006. A friend who is starting there this year confirms that this is still the case.

I actually interviewed there (and got accepted) and, yeah, they are building a GORGEOUS new dental school building.

I heard they are building a new building, which is good news, on the other hand though, the dean is strong on expanding the class size to be twice as large, rumor's saying it's to pay for the new building.

Speaking of University of Maryland, their admissions lady, I think her name was Sheila, is a really nice woman. I hope I get my interview there... 🙄

I'm at Maryland right now. The new building is right next to the old building, and isn't supposed to be completely finished until January or so. We'll be moving into it next year.

The dean here is pretty progressive, and is really excited about the building. It was designed by some high-falutin' architect who designed some other pretty impressive structures. Apparently he designed the new building to maximize the sunlight that gets in - there are even reflectors on top of the building to keep it well lit inside. This is definitely going to be a welcome change, since the current building is a little dungeon-ish.

The dean is making a major push to make all things digital, and is incorporating as much advanced technology (as far as I can tell) into the building as possible.

The class starting in 2006 (Class of 2010) will be the first ones to be in the building all four years. I'm actually wondering if they're waiting to interview until they can get their interview groups in for a tour (right now you have to wear a hard hat to get in there). Whatever the case, the new building is definitely going to be nice.

I know people earlier in this thread were wondering about invitations for interviews (as am i), but I was also wondering if any of you had heard back at all from UMD...regarding even secondaries, etc....

I want to go to University of Maryland. hehe. My parents just bought a house for my sister in Maryland since she is starting dental school this year. So, I was wondering if that makes me an in-state applicant since my name is also under the contract.

Sorry, no dice. Most schools require you to physically reside, work, and pay taxes in the state for 12 consecutive months before you can claim residency. Of course, this varies state to state and there are always exceptions (dependency, military service, spouse, employment, etc.)

Doh. Well, at least I will have a place to live if I get in 😀

maybe maryland might let you claim residency after your first year? i think home owners are treated differently than renters since its your permanent home. however, some places won't let you become in-state if you come in as an out-of-stater no matter what. i'm honestly not sure what the requirements are for UMD. anyways, it's definitely worth checking out though you know?

My uncle graduated from UMD and told me that I will be automatically considered an in-state student for tuition after one year, if I get in. I just hope I get in though. I heard great things from family and friends about UMD. Just that the admission's requirements go up n up every year. ;-(

that's great news on the residency after first year. they take a sizable chunk out-of-state applicants so it shouldn't hurt your chances too much when you apply.

yeah, UMD is definitely a top tier program. i attended their 3-day "dentistry today" program earlier this summer for prospective students. it was an incredible experience! (i recommend this to any future applicants interested in UMD). i was very impressed with the faculty and the overall program. plus the new dental school building looks really nice -- great architecture, WiFi, digital radiography, new equipment etc. the only bad thing i have to say about UMD is that baltimore is a very dangerous city (a classmate and a friend on my soccer team were both murdered last year in separate incidents, very tragic).

Good luck on your application! Maybe we'll see each other next year? haha

Best wishes!

Ouch, murdered? They were in UMD? Holy ****. My family never had a problem, and my friends love the school. I have to see for myself though. However, I would still go despite the crime rate. I only care about being a great dentist and if University of Maryland can do it, then I will certainly go there. I will just have to take up karate again 😀

Thanks for your honest input,
Rich

Sorry Richnator, I should have specified that the victims were both Johns Hopkins students -- not UMD students. And I agree with you in that I would still attend UMD despite the dangers of Baltimore City (it didn't keep me from going to Johns Hopkins for undergrad/grad school and it definitely wouldn't deter me from such a great opportunity at UMD).

That being said though, not everybody is cut out for city life so I think it is something people should consider when applying to schools. I hope nobody thinks I'm scaremongering by mentioning these tragedies. Believe me, it's a personal experience I wish I didn't have.

Haha, I come from New York and live in Brooklyn. So, I have my fair share of city life. However, my house in Maryland is in a suburban area. So, it is a really quiet place to study.

to the poster who is at UMD now: when could we all hope to hear from the school regarding our apps (secondaries and interview invites?)... since this is my state school, i am especially intersted in hearing from them!
