Dr. Tomic-Canic seeks a medical student or MD dermatology research volunteer for 12 months beginning in July/August 2015. The selected candidate will serve as a research volunteer for ongoing basic science and translational research projects related to wound healing. Although bench experience is preferred it is not a requirement. There is ample opportunity to learn several cellular and molecular techniques that include cell culture, human skin explants for assessing wound healing, molecular cloning, immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry. The research volunteer will have the opportunity to author multiple manuscripts, review articles, and abstracts as well as present their research at national conferences. In addition, the research volunteer is encouraged to attend weekly dermatology Grand Rounds, resident’s lectures, and other research meetings carried out by the department. There are also opportunities to attend the daily resident clinics as well as the weekly wound healing clinic.
Completion of this research experience will better prepare the volunteer for the dermatology Match.

Applicants must be either (1) enrolled in a U.S. allopathic medical school and have completed the 3rd year of medical school by the start of the research position or (2) finished medical school or intern year by the start of the research position.

Dr Tomic-Canic is an inventor and a leader in the field and encourages students to compose manuscripts, challenge their thinking, and creatively approach experimental design. Her innovative approach of utilizing human skin as a wound-healing model and developing the first human skin bank by collecting biopsies from patients with chronic wounds provides the unique opportunity to learn and perform skin biology research in a setting dedicated to translational research. Furthermore, her expertise in skin biology and cutaneous wound healing is unparalleled and provides the necessary training and skills to successfully procure a Dermatology Residency.
