Hi everyone, I’m having a lot of trouble making a decision and looking for any help deciding between these two schools. Cost of attendance is nearly identical between the two. I’m most likely not aiming for a super competitive specialty (probably neuro or IM) but will probably want to match on the east coast.

Michigan

Pros
  • (+++) Seems like the school really emphasizes choosing students who are interesting and have goals outside of medicine
  • (+++) Ann Arbor is a lovely college town and a place I could see myself really loving
  • (+++) Ability to do things like yoga, climbing, good food all within walking distance
  • (+++) Strong, very social community and student body. Students are where they are - not trying to head off to somewhere else each weekend
  • (++) Overall stronger program with better prestige
  • (++) Could live in a nice apartment or house with a large room, my own bathroom
  • (+) More research opportunity
  • (+) School spirit, overall vibe are fantastic. Love the idea of having game days in the fall
  • (+) Really great culture for medical learning in terms of how students get treated in hospitals by residents, physicians
  • (+) Stronger match pretty much anywhere outside of NY
  • (+) Beautiful campus with nice study spaces, libraries, and highly expansive medical campus
Cons
  • (- - -) 1 year preclinical and forced to take step 1 and 2 simultaneously after clerkships which seems very stressful for their students
  • (- - -) Giving up the one chance I’ll have to be in NYC in my 20s (slightly older applicant
  • (- - -) Far from home (NY). More difficult to see family and my girlfriend, along with many of my closest friends
  • (- -) Weather is pretty brutal, cold for much of the year
  • (- -) Condensed curriculum means shorter breaks, earlier start and more intense learning during the PC phase which seems to produce stress

Einstein

Pros
  • (+++) Near Manhattan where all my closest friends, family are
  • (+++) Would also be easier to see my girlfriend who lives in a nearby city
  • (+++) NYC is the city I want to be in both now and down the line
  • (+++) Genuinely happy and not stressed out students (Michigan students rave about Michigan but also seem to be more stressed with school)
  • (+++) Students seem to have a really strong community and are very social since they all live together
  • (++) 1.5 year preclinical, Friday exams
  • (++) Connections to other ny research institutions
  • (++) Protected time during clerkships
  • (+) Very strong match into NY
  • (+) Could probably see my family for meals each week very easily.
  • (+) Free tuition creates a culture where students are more free to pursue passions, feel unburdened
  • (+) Nice student gym where everyone hangs out, plays sports
Cons
  • (- - -) Location is awful, like truly awful. Only redeeming quality is its proximity to Manhattan, but the surrounding community does not seem like a nice place to be
  • (- - -) No good food around and no ability to find gyms, work in cafes, really do anything off the small campus unless going all the way down to Manhattan
  • (- -) Students seem like they are constantly trying to be in Manhattan and the constant commuting, having social life be an hour away from where I am seems rough
  • (- -) Less prestige, name recognition, and possibly fewer overall extracurricular opportunities
  • (- -) Tiny room with little to no space, shared bathroom for 4 years of my life
  • (-) Student body seems like it is highly regional and maybe slightly more traditional in terms of premed paths (I’m a nontrad student and would love to have classmates who are a bit older and have lived a few years out of college like myself)
  • (-) Medical campus is not so nice, facilities a bit outdated

You have great options. I think the above is the cincher. If your friends, partner, and family are around the school (and that is important to you, especially during a difficult time in medical school), and you want to end up in the city long-term, I think Einstein is the clear choice (especially if the CoA delta is higher than you think). Michigan is an incredible program, but Einstein is also very strong, and its reputation has grown. Regardless, you wouldn't be making a bad decision anyway you choose.

If IM and neuro are your interests, then I don’t think you should make this decision based on prestige. I would go with Einstein for the family support.

University of Michigan and its not even close in my opinion!

One of the best medical schools in the US, and part of an elite university. Their teaching hospital and home programs are also top notch! I was not particularly impressed by Einstein during the interview process and when interacting with students, so might bias my decision slightly.

UMich, imo, if you can't really get used to the idea of living in the Bronx

IM at MGH and IM at an hca are 2 very different things. The former is just as ,if not more, competitive than doing something derm/plastics/ortho

Just so we're clear, we're discussing Einstein vs. Michigan here, right? Not Michigan vs Ross lmao. Implying that OP will match at a bottom of the barrel IM program if they don't go to Michigan is ludicrous. Einstein's IM and neuro matches were great this year, as they are every year, especially with respect to NYC programs, which is where OP says they want to be. Even if they wanted to go to MGH, it's funny you mention it, because Einstein matched students to MGH IM and BIDMC IM this year while UMich did not. Not to mention Einstein matched students to other fantastic IM programs like Mt Sinai, NYP-Columbia, NYU, Stanford, Yale, and Baylor. I would actually argue that Einstein's 2025 IM match list is as impressive as UMich's, especially w/r/t the east coast.

I see no indication that OP wants to pursue academia, so going to the "most prestigious" school loses a lot of its meaning, especially if it means leaving family, SO, and friends.

I was curious, so I checked doximity. Einstein is a top feeder to 5 out of the top 20 IM residencies, which is very impressive. For reference, HMS is a top feeder for 8 programs, and Michigan is a top feeder for 2 out of the top 20. Both are great choices regardless.
