Does anyone know whether this is a community program or Uni program? I heard that they were under probation and am not sure why.

Anyone has any info about IM training at this program? Thanks.

I was invited for an interview there, too, and I'm interested in learning more about it before I get there.

I did my 3rd year IM clerkship with residents in this program... I'm fairly certain it is not on probation (there's a chance the IM program in Reno might have been though).

http://www.acgme.org/adspublic/reports/pbProgs.asp

I'm not sure if it is officially classified as one, but the feel of the program is definitely one of a university-affiliated program. They recently opened up their first fellowship in oncology, which is partnered with the Nevada Cancer Institute.

The attendings are great and very knowledgable... although they have an interim chair and are currently searching for someone to fill the position full-time. In recent years, from what I've noticed, they have filled their spots with a large majority of international graduates (who are extrememly well-qualified and often have monster board scores). If you look on their website, their board pass rate for the past year was also 100% and their in-service scores ranked in the 87th percentile.

If you have any other questions regarding the program, PM me and I can at least try to find someone that knows the answer if I myself don't. Good luck!

Thank you!!

Are you a practicing physician in LV? What's the generalist/hospitalist market like there?

Are you a practicing physician in LV? What's the generalist/hospitalist market like there?

I graduated med school from Nevada in May. Im in the middle of a research year in order to wait for my fiancée who's still a 4th year student.

I don't really have too much info on what the market is, but I have noticed that residents have no problems finding jobs after they finish (either with the hospital or in private practice).

Good luck!

University of Nevada SOM has 2 residency programs. One in Vegas and the other in Reno. The Reno program was on probation but was immediately removed after fixing a few minor things and currently has the longest accreditation given to programs recently on probation.

I am a 2010 graduate of the Reno program and have nothing but good things to say about it. We are a university program but have residents training in community hospitals and VA's. Vegas does not train at a VA whereas Reno does half their training at the VA.

Reno is a great place to live especially for those of you who like to do outdoorsy stuff (Lake Tahoe is a 45 minute drive and many people are out of the hospital parking lot and up on the ski slopes at Mount rose in 40 minutes)😀

Our program is changing and we have a lot to offer people who want a great learning environment and pursue their career goals.

We had an excellent match into fellowships this year (I am going to Duke for Pulm/CC in 7/2011) With many others matching into pulm/cc, ID, Sleep, and Hospice medicine.

We do not have any fellows and this makes your training opportunities very hands on. Our 3rd year residents run the ICU at the VA including intubating, placing lines and running codes all without fellow back-up. This may be the reason so many of us went into pulm/cc this year (we had a total of 4 match into pulm/CC)

The faculty are very supportive and available to the residents. I have all my attending's cell phones programmed into my cell and call them whenever I want for help or just to chat.

For those of you interested in research there are alot of opportunities if you are aggressive and ask to help the various professors.

We do not have any core medicine fellowships in reno but there is one in vegas but it is just a medical oncology fellowship so if you wany heme you will have to go elsewhere. We do have hospice and palliative care fellowship as well as geriatrics fellowship in reno.

Overall this is a great program to train especially if you want a low stress fun atmosphere with great learning and great schedules (all night float).

Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

Sorry if you only wanted to know about Vegas 🙁

Are any of you IMG's? If you get to know more about the program, can you please send me a PM? I will do the same if I know anything more about the program other than the info available on their website.

VegasMD, I sent you a PM. Thanks a lot guys/gals.

I only know about the Vegas program from personal experience as a 3rd year student in the program.

I think the program is strong and Vegas is a great place to live... Hope you guys give it a chance. My fiancée just had her interview there last week.

Good luck!

Any good fellowships at that program?

Any good fellowships at that program?

They just opened up an Oncology fellowship (partnering up with the Nevada Cancer Institute).

I think the reputation of the fellowship will only increase in the next few years.

They have a decent match rate as well... In just the last few years, I know of a cardiology match in Cali, rheumatology at Cleveland Clinic, and Endocrinology at Dartmouth.

I am not an IMG.

I am looking forward to this interview a lot! Mine is in 2 weeks.

Thanks VegasMD, got your PM. I am more interested in the Reno program because I heard that they have great primary care training and they matched a lot of their graduates into PCC fellowships. Vegas is a great city but, I think so is Reno (small town charm, close to Lake Tahoe, skiing, etc if you are into those activities!)

Good luck with the interview @Packamylase, hope it goes well for you. If you can, please do share your thoughts about the program in this thread or you can send me a PM. Thank you.

Does any one know if they offer early match/prematches?

Does any one know if they offer early match/prematches?

I know that they used to offer some in the past but not sure about this year. Are you a DO or MD? I think prematches cannot be offered to AMG's, rite?

From what I know and heard about the program thus far, I think it is an awesome program. Did you interview there? Please share your thoughts on the program if you feel comfortable. Thanks.

I'm a DO, I interview next week. 🙂

Hey guys remember that when you are talking about the university of Nevada there are two different programs. There is the program in Reno where the actual Medical school is located and then there is a program in Las Vegas.

I think Marianne11 is talking about Vegas and Renodoc is talking about Reno.

At Reno we do have Prematch offers to those applicants that have outstanding apps and are really interested in our program.

Obviously you have to be a DO, IMG, FMG, or an AMG that is at least 1 year out of medical school to qualify for prematch otherwise it would be an NRMP violation.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I am talking about the program in Reno. I heard good things about the Vegas program too. I like the Reno program more because it has what I am looking for in a training program.

Is your interview in Reno or Vegas? Good luck with the interview next week🙂

I'm talking about Vegas 🙂

Alright, here is my review of the program in Reno:

Pre-interview dinner: Chief resident and intern picked up the applicants from the hotel and a resident joined us at the restaurant later. Had a pretty good discussion about the program and it was very informative.

Facilities Tour: The residents work at both the VA and Renown Medical Center (RMC). RMC is a pretty new hospital and the facilities were very good. VA facilities were pretty standard and had nice new call rooms for residents, but apparently there is no assigned parking for residents at the VA. RMC had designated parking for physicians/residents. This VA does not have advanced cardiac unit so they refer their transplant and CABG patients to other VA facilities (mainly to Cali). The big advantage that the residents have is the ICU at this VA. They do not have fellows and therefore residents can do all the procedures...central lines, intubations, etc on their own so the autonomy is excellent. I really liked this part🙂

Morning Report: Outstanding, that's all I have to say! The attending, Dr. G (not sure if I can mention the name on SDN), is an excellent teacher. Applicants were then split into groups and assigned to different ward teams. This was great because I got to see how things work at this place. I was assigned to Dr. G's team, it was obvious that he loved to teach, he is brilliant. Great pathology from what I saw during wards and heard from the residents, night float, decent call schedule, good work hours, good faculty to resident ratio, very supportive staff and faculty.

Noon Conference: Not on the day of my interview but apparently they do have them.

Residents: Very friendly residents, great camaraderie and they all seem very happy. I think they are able to balance professional and personal lives really well in this program because they have good hours. Mix of married and single residents, diverse group....AMG, DO, IMG. Many residents have families in bay area and NorCal. Reno is a small town but lots of outdoor stuff to do if you are into that sort of thing. Minimal traffic....a Big plus!!😀

Interviews: Some got to interview with the Associate PD while others with the Chairman and one faculty. Personally, I would have liked to meet the PD or Associate PD but the PD was on vacation and never got the opportunity to talk to the associate PD. Very relaxed interviews, the faculty member asked some medical questions based on my experience and was very friendly. Chairman is relatively new and was also very nice, is keen to improve the program (they were on probation in the past but got full accreditation now). The faculty seemed very approachable and I got a really good feeling about this program.

Electives: One of the residents told me that they do not get paid for away electives and international electives. I am not sure if this is the case with all programs, never actually occurred to me that programs do not pay for away electives. So I never asked at other programs and neither did anyone specifically mentioned it. I guess it makes sense though because technically you are not working for them during the time you are away!

Fellowships: They have Hospice & Palliative and IM Geriatrics fellowships. But the chairman wants to bring Endo and Cards although funding seems to be an issue right now for those fellowships, so not sure if they will get them. They do not have cards or GI matches but if you are a Pulm/CC person like me, this place has AWESOME Pulm/CC match rate into some pretty competitive places like Duke. They have some Hem/Onc match success too.

Overall, I liked this program very much. The people were very nice, really friendly residents and great training and autonomy. I want to go into Pulm/CC eventually and their awesome match rate is a bonus! I got a great positive vibe about this place, I loved it!🙂 This place might not be for everyone though, especially if you are a big city person.

I'm interviewing at Las Vegas soon, and I would like to know what other's experiences have been. I am particularly interested in:
1) difficulty of getting cardiology fellowship
2) clinical schedule (1/2 a day per week, 4+1, etc)
3)opportunities to do research (basic sciences?)
4) any impression anyone had from their experience interviewing/rotating/working there.

THANK YOU!!!

Any other recent reviews? 🙂 Thank you!
