I interview December 2nd. I am an Oklahoma resident with a fairly skewed academic/DAT record (ie bad and good respectively.) I have heard pretty much all residents get interviews, but am concerned this might be for the wait list. Are December interviews bottom of the barrel or what?

I don't know how OU schedules these things, but I do know that plenty of people have had October interviews already, and many have been accepted.

Scores and grades:

AA=20, Chem=20, Bio=19, Ochem=19, RC=24, QR=16, PAT=22 - not bad except for the 16 in QR. OU doesn't care, or so I'm told.

As far as academics I have very high science grades, a 3.8 or thereabouts.

As far as my average GPA it's a 3.0-3.1. I know that's weird, but seriously: Physics, Biology, Chemistry - straight A's. English Comp, History, Psychology, etc... B average.

I returned to school to pursue this career and have a previous degree (with a 3.0) dragging me down. It could also be my QR on the DAT. Either way I am happy to have an interview, but am wondering what the December cycle is for. Are we the "Thanks, but..." group?

I appreciate any help or advice.

Ok, first things first... Dental schools can not tell you if you're admitted prior to Dec. 1st, so are you sure you know people that have already been accepted? As far as I know, OU decides their out-of-state and "top" in-state for the Dec 1st round of acceptances. (The Admissions committee will meet a few days prior to Dec. 1st.) They'll meet again in early to mid January to decide on the remaining in state applicants. Since only about 10 out-of-state residents get in to OU, approximately 46-50 will be from in state, so the bulk of the class is decided in Jan.

They do interview most in-state applicants that meet their basic requirements, but don't look at that as a bad thing... being a resident is a good thing, because that only leaves you competing with 150-200 applicants for ~50 seats. So while a Dec interview for the vast majority of other dental schools may not be considered ideal, that does not apply to OU.

Also, this link should help:

I had an interview in Oklahoma in October as an out-of-state. We were told that the Adcoms will meet on Nov 21st and pretty much decide on the out-of-staters (if you are in, out or waitlisted). I assume that it is different for in-staters. So I think you will still be interviewing for an open spot and not the waitlist. By the way, I do not think that QR=16 matters, because I have the same score and still got an interview even being out-of-sate and was told during the interview that I did good at DAT. Loved the school by the way, everyone was supernice. Good luck.

Thanks so much!

I also heard recently from my Biochem lab partner that he is interviewing on Dec. 5th, and he got a 23 on his AA.

😱

Smart bugger. Why do you think he is my lab partner. 😎

How did you get your invite? Email, Phone, AADSAS?

Major Groove:

No one has been accepted yet. As was mentioned previously, the first admissions committee meeting is Nov. 21st. The first meeting is mostly for out of staters. Your DAT is good. Your GPA is somewhat low, but if there has been an improving trend since you went back to school, then that will be a big plus.

I was at OU just a couple of days ago, and Admissions director said that applications from in-state students will began to be reviewed in December/early Jan, and most-instate students will be invited then. OU first deals w/ out of state students, then in-state.

Well since I have not heard a word from OU and I'm out of state then it looks like I'm out of luck!! Shucks
