I didn't see a thread for the class of 2013, so I am starting one. Who else has been accepted to Pittsburgh?

I'm so excited for Pittsburgh!

Go Steelers

Good idea for a thread 🙂 Did you decide Pittsburgh?

WOO! I'm in! 🙂

Did you decide on a school between Ohio State and Pittsburgh?

Yes I am choosing Pittsburgh. Even though Ohio seems to have the better/more developed program, I enjoyed Pittsburgh a lot more. There's more culture, things to do, and the program is good as well. It seems that not a lot of people on SDN talk about Pitt, which is a shame because it's awesome!

You're right, I'm not sure why it's not as popular too. It might be because they accept a very small amount of out-of-state students? But I really enjoyed Pittsburgh when I went, seems like a great school.

That's fantastic! I will be joining you at Pittsburgh in the upcoming fall. I haven't received my official letter, but I can't wait for it to arrive so I can pay my deposit. Maybe then I'll stop thinking about which school is right for me haha.
I also noticed that about Pitt on SDN, maybe it has a lot to do with the fact that good portion of their program is made up with in-state students.
Anyways, are you in or out of state? I'll be flying out from AZ so it will be a big change for me, but I am looking forward to it. Have you thought about where you will be living for the 1st year?

I am coming from CA (I win!). I've been looking at this website: http://www.ocl.pitt.edu/RoomSublets/index.html for possible rooms for rent. Rent is so much cheaper than in CA so I might just get a 1 bedroom apt for myself. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons between living with strangers and living by myself. I am still figuring out what's best. I guess if I see an amazing 1 bedroom apt, I might get it. If I see amazing potential roommates, I might do that instead. What are you doing?

P.S. You haven't received your letter yet? I got it a week ago! Maybe you should ask about it...in case it got lost or something. The date to turn in your deposit is the first week of April..which is next week.

I have been looking at the same page trying to see if what was out there as far as roommates, but it seems like most people prefer females.. 🙁
I would like a studio or 1 bedroom, but to save money, i'm sure I'll find a roommate somewhere. I just want a place that's close to the campus.

I have been talking with Ms.Borrelli about it and today she faxed me over the letter of intent to send with the check, so I'll have my spot. Was there anything else important included with the mailing??? If it doesn't come by tomorrow, I am probably gonna ask her to send me a new packet or something....

Yeah..I received my letter on Monday. The only thing that was in there was 2 copies of the same letter granting admission. $500 deposit is due April 2!

Do you know if I should be actively looking for apartments now? It seems kind of early to look for an apt for August, but I'm not sure what is the best time to do so. It's so hard since I'm coming from California and I have to make a trip to Pitt to see apartments...Any advice?

If you're looking for an apartment, look now. Options become limited real quick. I know landlords that asked their tenants if they were staying another year two months ago. Good luck...don't be discouraged by the gross ones. I came to Pitt and spent one weekend looking for apartments, and had to choose one before I left. Not a good time.

Any neighborhoods and apt complexes you would recommend?

If you want something close to school, south oakland preferably, some places in north oakland. If you want somewhere nice, shadyside (have to take a bus to get to campus though). As for apartment complexes, nothing really. Its all kind of luck. Look at as many places as you can in the amount of time you have.

hmm I can't figure out if I should try to find a one-bedroom for just me or attempt to find roommates (who I may/may not get along with). This being my first year in pharmacy school, I really don't want to have drama at home to deal with... so 1-bdrmm...or roommates???

Don't you mean Go Panthers? 😀

Welcome to the Big East! (or as we like to call it, the BEast)

For me, I think I'm going to look for an roommate definitely. It's cheaper out there, but considering I'll have to take out a huge loan to cover my tuition, I want to save where I can. It would be nice if I could find someone that's in the pharmacy school, because we'll all be classmates and we can study together and it would keep me focused. If not, I'll be spending most of my times at the library.

P.S. Go Panthers! but I'm even a bigger Steelers fan!!!! 🙂

I just got my financial aid offer letter and it's not looking good. I was so set on going to Pitt but now I feel like I need to rethink my decision...

As an out-of-state student that has already spent 4 years as an undergrad, I REALLY need those grad loans. However, Pitt decides that the first two years of pharmacy is still of an "undergraduate level" in terms of financial aid because many/most of the class are technically in their 3rd year of college. That makes me basically a 5th/6th year as an undergrad and only eligible for stafford loans. They are ONLY giving me 4,750 a semester...I need 23,000 alone for tuition! I wish that I was told this earlier before I was so set on Pitt...

But I don't know...I basically have to find other lenders with high interest rates and deal with it, or...go to OSU. What do I do!

I definitely understand your concern. But I thought if you have a degree prior to starting pharmacy school you would be considered a first year grad student your P1 year (financial aid purposes)... You should ask about that.
I agree, 23,000 for tuition is a lot of money but Ohio State is more expensive for out of state students i believe.

What area are you guys thinking about living next year? Im going to need a roommate too 🙂

No, the poster probably doesn't.

Pitt has no fans. The Yinzers just don't care.

You will see people walking around outside of the Peterson Events Center wearing Penguins and Steelers shirts. I'll occasionally make the brave trek up to the wretched city and see like 4 people all day with Pitt gear on. DEFINITELY not a college sports town. Being an ice soccer fan is en vogue right now, though...I guess they're good or something.

I haven't received my financial aid offer yet, funny how you are in CA and I am in AZ, but you receive everything before I do, but I am not looking forward to it either. I think I am going to give their financial aid office a call once I receive my offer to see what I can do. I thought getting in was hard, but trying to find ways to pay for it is even harder 🙁

Pitt sees it as you are getting your 2nd bachelor's degree for financial aid purposes for the first 2 years. I am definitely giving them a call on Monday. But just giving a heads up to out-of-state people wanting to go to Pitt.

Ohio State is 30k the first year, but 15k after that (as an in-state resident). Also I would be getting those grad loans...

But I really do like Pitt more..haha. dilemma!

I'm happy I was accepted to Pitt! I'm headed over there to look for apts. Contemplating finding a roommate. If any of you are interested, email me. [email protected]

Hey everyone! Although I have made the decision to attend a different pharmacy school, I am a current undergrad Pitt student. I figured I would give some advice about apartments to help everyone out.

1. South Oakland is kinda gross. I would avoid living there if possible even though its really close.
2. North Oakland is much better (Safer and still close the pharmacy school)
3. A lot of Pharmacy and Dental students live in Washington Plaza Apartments...DON'T DO IT! It looks really nice but I have heard complaints from almost every resident about rodents, cockroaches, etc.
4. If you have a car or don't mind a 15 minute bus ride, live in Shadyside. It is a nice area and there are more apartments available at the last minute.

Hope this helps!

well, i called and they said there was nothing they could do for me and i'd have to find outside loans...

while i called osu and they said they'd give me 50k in loans (if needed) as well as scholarships.

advice to others: ask about financial aid before accepting if it matters to you.

i think this panther is turning into a buckeye...

So I found out a few days ago that I've been accepted! I live in Pittsburgh so if any of you have any questions I MIGHT be able to answer them. I have lived in Pittsburgh for 6 years (went to Pitt to take some classes in 2007) so I know a little bit about the school as well.

Does OSU consider Pharmacy students as a graduate student? But either way, I'm glad to hear that OSU is willing you give you loans and scholarships.

How is everyone else planning on paying for pharmacy school? I don't have the slightest idea 🙁

The advice I got over the phone was a, sort of sympathetic, "Well, you'll just have to find outside loans."

Good luck!

This thread has been dead for some time... 😴

Is there a facebook group for our class?

Alright...so now I'm kind of stressing about this whole financial aid thing. How is everyone planning on paying for the first two years? I'm prepared to take out massive private loans, but if anyone knows of any alternatives let me know. I might start playing the lottery...

I would be very interested to hear how the above posters paid for Pitt considering the gradPLUS loans are not available until P3. Can any of you guys share your results?
