Just got a brochure from Pitt in the mail (unsolicited). Interesting approach to marketing: the brochure features 14 short personal essays by current students (mostly MS2, as far as I can tell). Obviously Pitt is emphasizing their student diversity, range of opportunities, innovative curriculum, etc. but what struck me the most was the surprising number of non-trads (at least 6 of the 14). Judging by the brochure, Pitt doesn't just tolerate non-trads, they genuinely appreciate them and actively recruit them. I'm only aware of a couple other schools that might fall into that category.

Any thoughts?

I didn't apply to Pitt, so I don't know. I did see in the MSAR that Creighton explicitly encourages non-trads to apply, though I didn't apply there either. 😳

Non-trads with your MCAT score might have a few more options than average...

😉

Hmm, *I* am not the one receiving an unsolicited brochure from U. Pitt!! 😛

I must have signed something that released my data when I registered for the MCAT. I've received unsolicited information from 3 schools so far...

I did, too. One was a podiatry school. 😱 But seriously, I didn't get anything from Pitt, so don't sell yourself short. Their program sounds pretty cool from everything I've heard about it. Are you going to apply there?

Probably not. For various reasons I'm casting a small net...

I live in Pittsburgh and yes it's true Pitt likes non-trads and those with interesting backgrounds and talents. So they say. I'm hoping they take me! It would be sweet not to have to move. But it's also a tough school to get into. Case Western in Cleveland is also known for liking non-trads. Also Drexel in Philadelphia. I only know the ones in my tri-state area...

Hey- I was reading the post about your son, and just wanted to say, cool name. I'm a big van der rohe fan.

I got Pitt's brochure today. Of all three of my unsolicited contacts, I found this one to be the most impressive. First, they learned how to use mail merge correctly and actually addressed the letter to me, instead of "Applicant." Second, the letter appears to have been signed in ink by a real person. Third, the brochure seems totally geared toward attracting a variety of applicants, including a fair amount of non-trads. I'm going to add it to my list of "second wave" AMCAS schools, on the off chance that I feel inspired enough to send out my application another time.

Thanks, not many people get it. They think I misspelled Miles or something.

And I'm a big fan of your SDN name. We make a lot of unfrozen caveman jokes around my house ever since that dumb study came out (study where they used microcephalic kids to understand cavemen because, in their words, microcephalic kids ARE cavemen. my son's microcephalic so I didn't appreciate the study. makes for good jokes around here. we're kind of sick...)

Just stopping by the forum, noticed this thread... I'm one of the fourteen students in the brochure and am a non-trad. Aside from defending our speech patterns (the designer took a little leeway in transcribing our comments), I can assure you that Pitt likes non-trads. I think the reason is that Pitt really looks at the quality of the person in constructing its entering class, and non-trads generally have more diverse life experience to draw on. I'd encourage you to apply if you think you'd like it here. People are almost invariably blown away by their interview day, and Pitt is a great environment in which to learn medicine.

Good to know, thanks for contributing. 🙂

(btw, I like the Pumpkins too)

Nice to hear such great things about Pitt. 👍

They will surely go near the top of my list.

Ya, Pitt is good. Let me know if y'all have any questions. I'll try to stop in this forum a couple times in the next few days.

Pumpkins rock pretty hard! The other quote is Muse, who are one of my favorite bands now.

Peace.

Pitt might love non-traditional students but they show their undergrads no love in the admissions process.

I disagree with the last statement.
I went to PITT undergrad and would really consider applying there for med school.

Considering and marticulating are two separate sides of the fence. My comment still stands.
