call me excited or call me lame, doesn't really matter--but is it too early to start a Rochester Class of 2008 thread? I know that more people have been hearing from them the past couple of days and I figured maybe it would be cool/helpful if we got to know each other or something? It's worth a shot, right?

I don't think it's too early at all! I'm soooo excited that I've been accepted into UofR. It was my first choice and has been since I was a freshman here (at the U of R)! Congratulations Jose!

hey...

i'll add myself here too.. though i'm not a 100% def that I'll be coming... but so far... count me in.

hey drmarj congrats on your acceptance! that's great news, especially since it was your first choice! given that you're familiar with the area and in particular, the notorious winters, is it fairly easy to drive in the snow up there?

man, I can't wait for classes to meet everybody and for classes to start--I'll be on edge for the next few months.

have u graduated already jh94? or are you still in school?

I graduated a couple years back--been working in the 'real world' since then. Yourself?

I haven't been accepted, but also loved Rochester and am waiting on pins and needles (interviewed in early October). Did all of you get a phone call before a letter? Thanks! 😍

I received the phone call 2 days before the letter. Good luck!

I actually got a letter before a phone call...that may possibly be because my permanent address is like two hours away from Rochester and the mail gets there pretty fast.

As for the winters--Rochester is not as bad as Buffalo or Syracuse. However, I'm a big fan of studded snow tires and of course allowing extra time to get places. A lot of people flip out with snow, but honestly...it's not that bad.

I am so excited to start!!!

Well I'm writing this post...maybe I'll ask u your opinions. I got into Rochester, obviously, and I have a lot of reasons for wanting to be here. My family is close, the school is great, I'm established in the community, I have a serious boyfriend here...things are kind of centered around rochester. But I also have this interview for UPENN which is undeniably a great school. It's for December 5th. Should I still go...just to get it out of my system....or just come to terms with the fact that I really don't have the money to travel down there and just call and respectfully decline? Any opinions would be great! Thanks 🙂

I would go check out UPenn...you never know. Maybe there'll be something you LOVE there. Or maybe it'll make you appreciate Rochester more. My vote - Go!

As much as I love Rochester, I still think it's been worthwhile for me to have taken other interviews since being accepted there. If nothing else, it's given me the chance to meet other people, see other schools, and develop an even better understanding of what I'm looking for in a school. I didn't apply to Penn, but from what I've heard, it is a wonderful school and I personally don't think I could pass up an interview there. Like someone else said, maybe going to Penn will open up your eyes to some aspect of their school that you'd like a lot or maybe it would just further strengthen your love for Rochester. That's certainly what's happened with me and my other interviews!

Good luck with your decision. I hope to see you in the fall!

Go visit Penn! I've been to both. They're excellent schools, but in different environments that you should just visit and experience for yourself. Congrats!

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice everyone 🙂 🙂

bumping... now that there are more U of R's out there

and question- how good is U of R's financial aid.. any ideas?

peace

Count me in!!! I'm so excited!

I've been accepted! U of R is by far the best school that I visited. I can't wait until August! Congratulations to all of you.

Thanks Jose. I have a question for you. When you sent back your acceptance card, did they send you any additional info in the mail?

Yeah, I just got an additional mailing this week. It included:
-another letter detailing what requirements I need to meet in order to enroll
-info about having a car and a medical instrument kit
-general orientation stuff and info about a program they have for people who want to brush up on their biological sciences the week prior to orientation
-info about computers

They also said we'll get financial aid stuff in the late winter/early spring and more specific orientation stuff in the summer.

Hope that helps.

be excited. i'm a first year at rochester and i love this school, most of all my classmates 🙂

Ok my slang has to come out from time to time. Congrats to all of you on your acceptances!! For those of you waiting, best of luck.

I have also been accepted into Rochester

Seriously, is there a sweeter looking hospital than Strong? I mean the place didn't even look like a hospital when I first walked in. I have not decided to go to Rochester for sure because it is a decent distance from home. However, I can only see one school in the area that I would consider going to over rochester and that's Columbia. So, most likely I hope to join all of you in the class of 2008!!

Anybody know anything about housing? I am not sure if Rochester provides any housing and if so, has anyone seen it or lived there? I assume that if rochester does have "dorms" available they would be rather close to the med school. I want to avoid buying a car so living close to school would be ideal. I figure I could jump on the bus if I needed get around. Is this a bad idea and should I start looking for a used car?

Again Congrats to everyone accepted. it really is an awesome school. hands down, its by far the best school I've seen so far.

Congrats Desi!

As far as the housing goes, I recall the students saying that there are a lot of places really close to campus (I'm pretty sure both of my tour guides were within walking distance). I don't think the school has dorms (although I could be wrong about that), but I do know that the housing in the Rochester area is incredibly cheap. You can easily find a 2- or 3-bedroom house to rent for $500-700/month total (I've found quite a few online). I don't know how feasible a bus would be, because from what I've heard, the public transportation in the area isn't great.

I called rochester today and spoke to Pat Samuelson. She mentioned that there ARE housing accomodations available at rochester. However, its on a lottery system and there is no gurantee that any of us would get housing. It seems that there are plenty of places in the area to rent. She also recommended a car but didn't think it would a "requirement." I am still debating the car thing. Good luck everyone!

you definitely want a car while you're here. while it's not a requirement, it will make your life much, much easier. rochester isn't a walking city at all. even if you live on campus and walk to school everyday, you'll need to get groceries, rent movies, go have fun with people, run to the post office, etc, etc. i STRONGLY recommend it!

and Pat Samuelson is right--there are two main places for med students on campus, that's goler house and university park. and there are TONS of places to rent should you decide to live off-campus. I myself live in an apartment complex not far away that i like a lot. a lot of students also live in the park avenue area, since that's sort of the hip part of rochester 🙂

Just bumping this up. Any new Rochester acceptees?

A car is a necessity in Rochester. You will kill yourself if you don't have one. The grocery store next to the medical center just closed, so you'd have to take the bus to get food.

You guys will love the school. I have for 3.5 years. I do have to say the weather sucks. Our high was 0 yesterday, with a -35 wind chill. BRR.

Housing is OK, but seriously think about getting a house, you won't be sorry. You can get a lot of house for between 75-100K. With low interest rates you're looking at 500/month payment. In fact, buy my house!!!

Ed

Wegman's here I come. It is Wegman's isn't it?

It is Wegmans, but the one behind the Medical center is closed. The next closest Wegmans is a 15 minute drive away. There is also a grocery store called Tops about 5 minutes away. Better than the old Wegmans that closed but not as good as the other Wegmans.

How long did it take for all of you to hear back after your interviews? I interviewed on January 12th and am getting so anxious waiting.:scared:

Hey man,

No worries at all. That's not even 4 weeks. I applied really early and it still took 6 weeks, so I think you're fine for awhile. I'm guessing they'll probably give out 1 or 2 more batches of acceptances before the march 15 deadline. Good luck.

March 15th??? Do you mean May 15th, or is there something I'm missing?

Hey ZekeMD!

When JH94 said March 15th, I think he meant the deadline where med schools have to accept at least the number of students to fill their class. Acceptances can go out after that if a school usually has many students decide not to go there.

Ok that makes sense. I didn't even think about that. Thanks!

Hi guys. I received a call after about five weeks. Good luck!

I got the call 6 weeks after my interview! I hope to see lots of you there as I'm 99% sure that's where I'll be.

Congrats Zeke! I hope to see you there.

Does anybody know when we get info on the White Coat Ceremony? Specifically, I'd like to know how many relatives/friends we're allowed to have. Some of my family members want to come (and consequently leave the time open on their calendars--2 in particular have very rigid schedules), but I'm not sure if they should if there are a limited number of attendees/student.

how does rochester's waitlist work? is it tiered? also, how much movement is there, or has there been in past years? this is my top choice school and I was just waitlisted... any suggestions?

Hey precisionplus, sorry I can't be more of a help but I don't know how Rochester's waitlist works. When did you interview? I'm still waiting to hear back from Rochester post-interview. If I find out anything I'll let you know.

Sorry to hear about those that are waitlisted, I hope you get in. Rochester is a great place.

Jose, maybe you can call the admissions office and ask about the white coat ceremony. I'm not exactly sure how it works I am also interested since I have lots of family in the area.

Where are you looking for housing? I just received the housing packet the other day and am not sure if I will apply for university housing or not.

Zeke,

There are a bunch of cheap houses/townhouses/condos in Rochester and I'm fairly certain I'll be living in one with my fiancee. We're actually heading up there Thursday to look for a place to live. I'm psyched (although the weather looks pretty crappy for the time we'll be up there). I guess I'll give the admissions office a call and see what they say.

received waitlist letter: 2/26
dated: 2/23

Bump...any new acceptances or people who've made their final decision to attend Rochester? I spoke with my friend last night who knows a group of people planning to attend Rochester...he told me we'll have a good class 😀

Rochester is one of the best med school I have ever seen (I think it is under rated) and I really like their programe. The facility is first class, the faculty is very supportive and the students are very friendly and happy. It is a vary hard decision for me to give up my spot .... after months of painful analysis... I withdrew my acceptance from this great school..... hope it will speed up the waitlist movement for those in waiting.... Congrats for those been accepted and good luck to those still in waiting...:horns: 👍

Heck YEAH! Rochester is a sweet school. Sorry to hear that you won't be attending, but being from CA I can understand how you'd want to stay out west. UCLA is a great school too. Good luck to you.

Hey ZekeMD,

Thanks. Good Luck to you too!

May 15th is fast approaching. Has anyone else decided on Rochester?

any news for anyone going to Rochester? any final decisions for people agonizing over a decision?

for those of you who definitely know you're going, where are you living and when are you moving up there?

I have decided to tentatively accept University of Rochester.... It is the only acceptance I will be holding on to unless I hear from Mayo (knock on wood)... those who want to go to U of R please pray for my Mayo acceptance so that I can free you up a spot! 🙂
