I'll keep this short, USA is going to cost me about 120k total for tuition and living. Has anyone dealt with this kind of debt, on the salary of a PT, or has anyone thought of a way to pay this back without having to do the ramen and hotdog diet.

Thanks!

I plan on joining either the Navy or the US Public Health Service. Hopefully their tuition reimbursement programs will cover at least half the cost. Plus the experience of having full autonomy and traveling across the country and the world is one worth having.

Shyster, thanks for the reply. I actually plan on joining the Navy as well. Currently I work for the Navy as a civilian and what you mentioned is what has compelled me to go active duty.

But there is a problem, I have contacted various healthcare recruiters and none of them said there is any kind of loan repayment for PTS. Unlike nursing, MD, dentist, PA, and even OT, there is not a huge need for physical therapist in the Navy and in turn, no incentives for you to join outside of a commission.

Any links I may have missed?

Any thoughts on going to a less expensive school?

Sure, check out this link: http://www.navy.com/careers/healthcare/clinical-care/physical-therapy.html

I'll get some other links when I have time

All. The. Time.

But, I'm in a weird situation with my state residency. I am originally from Florida but have since moved to Indiana for about a year. I haven't claimed residency in Indiana but I have worked here for a year which pretty much disqualifies my in state tuition in Florida. Plus, I wanted to apply to schools that used paper apps or emphasized the last 60 hours because PTCAS breaks down my GPA Poorly.

My stats via PTCAS:
GPA: 3.18
Prerequisite: 3.2
GRE: 1270

My stats via last 60 and St. Augustine:
GPA: 3.5
Prerequisite: 3.5
GRE: 1270

Plus, I don't want to wait another year to start PT school 🙁

Shyster,

This is what I pulled from the link you sent me:
"There's an alternative to spending years paying down the cost of your graduate education. If you're currently a practicing professional, you could potentially be eligible to receive financial assistance through the Navy Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP). Talk to a Navy Officer Recruiter for more information."

I've talked to Medical Officer Recruiters and they've all told me that they aren't offering any assistance to Physical Therapists at this time. Same for the Air Force.

Fejin,

I see your point on both counts. It's also worth noting that 3 years from now everything could be different. Also, I was referring to the USPHS not the public service loan forgiveness program which PT don't currently qualify for. Here's the link to their website: http://www.usphs.gov/default.aspx look around and see if it might interest you.
