University of the Pacific

Do any of you know if the University of the Pacific is good for undergrad. study in Bio/Chem/BioChem for a future med-school student. 😀

Both of my roommates did undergrad at UoP (one did bio, the other AT). And both are doing great in med school. Completely anecdotal, but I'm from Iowa--it's a wonder I even know where the Pacific is...

it's a good school, just go where you would feel comfortable. that's in stockton, right? if you'd want to live in stockton for 4 years and you like the campus/school, go for it. i've never been to stockton, so i can't really comment on what there is to do there.

i applied there. and got accepted. but i'm probably going to lafayette, which is in pennsylvania.

Can you handle Stockton for 4 years? That should be the biggest question.

Yea, not much happening in Stockton. I had a friend transfer there from my ugrad and he says the city isn't that great. UOP did pretty well in the NCAA tournament this year and former number 1 pick Michael Olowokandi went there, so at least it has some name recognition.

Haha, thanks guys. Hmm, Stockton for 4 years does sound like a pain in the 😱 , The only other choices I have are to apply to either state schools or go to a cc and transfer to a UC. I can apply straight to UC's, but I don't think they appreciate people without ap classes, lol...Oh yea, back to Uop. So, is the university pretty good overall for a pre-med, or should I just go the cc to uc way....Need help, thanks! 👍

I would say to just go to UOP. Being in the same university for four years will help you develop better relationships with professors and allow you to commit/devote yourself to activities. Though most admissions office will tell you that they don't mind any CC work, its a lie. 3 of my interviewers mentioned this to me, even as far as aksing if i did anywork at a CC. But again, UOP is freakin expensive for ugrad, like it is for their professional schools.

That's true, UoP is very expensive as compared to some other schools. I wonder how difficult the science classes are going to be at UoP. Also, Should I major in Bio/Chem/ or Biochemistry, if I get in? I know that I'm eligible to apply as a pre-med, should I do that? Or should I just apply under a science major... As far as getting admitted into med school is concerned, the admissions people told me that their med school acceptance rate is 90%, which I consider to be pure bs....Of course they are including the gpa cutoff. lol...I just hope that I make it to a good med school in the end, after graduating from UoP...The best thing to do would be to talk to people with past experiences.

going to UOP will not close any doors for you....it may not be Harvard, but your undergrad school matters very little, and UOP is a fine institution. Just get a good GPA whereever you go. And i'm not sure how the 'premed' major works, the school i go to doesn't have a premed major, but if you have to choose a major, don't be under the impression that you have to major in biochemistry or chem or bio....major in whatever interests you....you can get into medical school with philosophy, art history, or whatever major - just take the prerequisite courses.

Well in that case, I have a lot of time to decide, plus I can get help from people on this forum. I wonder what the "easier" major is out of Bio/Chem/ Biochem..... 😀
