University of Toledo Waitlist ????

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was looking at last years thread, and it looks like there has already been more waitlist movement than all of last year. Or at least more acceptances from waitlists have been posted on SDN than were posted last year, so hopefully they will get through the high priority this year as well as part of the middle priority.

I'm trying so hard to be an optimist here😳, and i don't bet---but if I were, I would bet that this year's WL movement would be more like last years rather than 2006...the reason I say this is because as an amateur statistician, if you look AAMC's data, the # of applicants keeps increasing every year, but unfortunately the # of spots in medical schools has not increased significantly enough to keep up with the pace of applicants..... So, if AAMC's data holds true for Toledo, then they are receiving more applications, interviewing more people, but their spots are more competitive because there are less spots around the country to fill... that MIGHT be a reason why the waitlist didn't move a great deal last year 🙁

all THIS amidst a looming, national doctor shortage scheduled to start being an issue by 2012. Approximately 42K applicants for 16K spots--- (MD, not counting DO)... estimates say there needs to be between 10,000 and 25,0000 more physicians by 2020. Go figure.😱 numbers!

I totally agree with you, however in the past schools have given out more acceptances than they had space for assuming that people would drop. However last year because of the increased number of applicants, less people dropped, and a lot of schools were left with too many accepted students, and not room enough for them, and as a result no waitlist movement. This year I think schools are being a little more conservative making sure they don't over accept again, and that is why I think the waitlists will move a little more, however who really knows.
I am also not really sure if Toledo ever over accepts since they doing a rolling admissions,

I'm trying to remember if they increased the class size this year or not... I believe our class was bigger than the previous year's by 10-15. Abilene might be able to help out if she pops up.

Still, this would be better odds for you guys.

I am pretty sure I remember someone during my interview say that they increased the class size, but I am not sure who said, so I do think you are right.

Congratulations!!! Whoo-hoo!

I'm praying for quick movement on the OOS list as my son is also high priority. This is his 3rd application cycle so we're all crossing our fingers. I guess Kelly Burgin told him to call Friday (that would be 2 weeks since he found out he is high priority) to tell him where he is at on the list. Hoping he's HIGH on the high priority list!

Good luck everyone!

FutureDr'sMom 😛

Just wondering if your son had called and talked to Kelly yet today. That would be great if she tells him where in the high priority he is. I called and asked her, and she told me that she was not authorized to say, so Maybe I will call and ask again just to give it a shot.

Hey all,
I'm new to SDN... I was placed in the middle third of the UT wait list. I'm an in-state traditional student. Would anyone be willing to share their stats... MCAT, GPA, etc. I'm curious to see how the list pans out.

Also, writing a LOI to the dean of admissions is a good idea, right? Email and postal mail?

Thanks! 🙂

I dont mind sharing that. I was OOS high priority traditional and just got accepted. I had a 31P on my mcat (12 BS 12 PS 7V - ya i really messed up on my verbal, im not sure how that happened) overall GPA of 3.95, and a science GPA of 3.98. Also, i got an immediate response from the admissions office when i sent my letter, and was accepted one week after they acknowledged they got it, so im really glad i sent one. Good luck, and lets hope they make it into that middle priority group this year.

-Non-traditional, In-state
-Wait listed, Accepted Off WL Before They Assigned Me A Ranking 1/3rd
-MCAT 32M (10P, 9V, 13B)
-3.67 GPA, 3.51 BCMP. Very strong GPA uptrend: 3.89 GPA at my most recent school while working full time. GPA would have been much higher, but was killed a bit by an incomplete from 12 years ago 🙁
-10 years of professional IT experience.
-ER volunteer (not that many hours) & shadowing (~50 hours)
-Very strong LORs, including one from my long term employer.

Assuming that people have had their two weeks to make a decision since the wait list was prioritized, and acceptances went out, is this the week that another group of acceptances goes out?

It seems like the emails pulling people off the waitlist come out tuesdays and thursdays...

what are my chances realistically? I talked to Sandy and she said the waiting list was moving steadily but I forgot to ask her whether it was for OOS or IS. I'm guessing from the previous posts that she was probably referring to the IS waitlist. What's worse is that they won't tell you "X number of people are on the waitlist in total and you are ranked number so and so." I'm assuming they have a legit reason for it.

I called yesterday, and she said the waitlist movement for OOS was moving gradually. I do not know how the movement for IS is doing, but it usually moves slower (based from older posts). The lady I spoke with said there was ~50 on the high priority section. I should have clarified if that is the number remaining on the high priority or if that is the total. I'm guessing total for high priority. There seems to be a depletion of posts on SDN for those coming off the waitlist, looking forward to seeing others getting off!

Just got a phone call. OOS/High priority. The list is moving, everyone keep positive. Toledo COM 2012!!!!

Congrats,

So I guess they are calling now, did you get an email too?

well, 50 people on high priority alone is not encouraging at all. However, I have heard from fellow "wait listees" who met with Dr. Kleshinski that other med schools (esp. in OH) are increasing their class sizes and thus accepting more people off the waitlist which allows UT to reach further down in their waitlist pool. Also, people have been admitted off the waitlist well into early september. A friend of mine from last yr's class told me that 2-3 people dropped out or deferred their first yr in the first month or so due to extenuating circumstances. but i can't deal with that kind of wait so if i don't hear anything by end of june, I'm moving on with my life. best of luck to all though!

I got a phone call, which I did not answer and let go to voicemail (oops!) around 11 am central time and an email immediately following that.

50 people in the high priority? When I called they told me that there was only about 80-100 total on the alternate list. I just assumed that each third was broken down in to thirds, so I was figuring that there was at most 34 people in the high priority.
Can Medical schools make alternate list any more ambiguous?

So how many OOS high priority people are left on SDN? I'm hoping we see some OOS middle priority movement soon.

hi folks,
i've been checking this thread religiously and i wanted to let you know i got a call from Sandy today (~11am)!!! I'm an OOS female, not sure if i'm trad/non-trad--i just finished my master's in public health.
good luck to those still on the waitlist!

CONGRATULATIONS Superstar16111!!!

So you were on the High Priority listing? My son is too - I wish they would call him up soon. This waiting is driving everyone in the family crazy! Fortunately, I'm a teacher so I'm off work right now, but I'd like to be able to plan the move in trip so I can start helping him get everything ready. All of the very best to you superstar16111!!! Again, congratulations! You have much to be proud of.

Hang in there. I was OOS high priority last year and got the call in early July... (It was my 3rd cycle too)

Waiting drove me crazy too.

Good luck :luck:

hi ms. smith,

yes, i was "high priority" OOS. also, i think you mentioned that your son has been calling every week...i used that strategy as well (i was calling kelly) and couldn't get a hold of her last week and ended up leaving a message on fri afternoon saying "hi, its me again, you told me to call this week about my status and any movement so i'm checking in b/c i'm still really interested" and she actually called me back on monday morning and left me a lengthy message basically saying "i can't tell you exactly where your name is on the list, but call back again in 2 or 3 weeks and...maybe sandy will allow me to tell you exactly where you are on the list if your name is getting close". so, from those words, it sounds like she didn't think i was close on monday, but sandy called and offered me a spot on weds...so it sounds like the list (maybe OOS-specifically) is moving quite fast...? again, good luck!

Okay, I need all of your expertise once again.

While my son is waiting to hear if he gets in off the OOS high priority list...should he reapply to AMCAS or just wait it out. I mean, it's pretty definite (I know nothing is a certainty) that he'll get in, right? It's just a matter of when. Nobody wants to pay new AMCAS fees if you don't have to, right?

Grrrrrr...if I hate this process, what must ALL of YOU be feeling?!?!

Thank you all!

Here's what you do.

Fill out the AMCAS, get everything set up, and just apply to one school (cost $160). That gets the ball rolling and everything verified. Then once the verification process is complete and if it looks like the waitlist isn't panning out, your son can designate more schools for $30 each at a later date. The schools will get his application instantly when he designates them, there is no additional verification required when he does that.

That's the best way to hedge your bets...

I am an IS female with middle priority and Sandy called me today at 3:30 to offer me a spot. I declined because I'm going to UC instead. Good luck to all.

WHAT?? IS middle priority? I thought the OOS list was moving faster than the IS one. Is this because the IS waiting list is smaller so they can get through the high priority people quicker? I can't make much sense of this.

I was shocked when I saw that as well. IS middle priority??? I called today and they said they are still going thru the top priority section. I'm soo confused 😕

This is an anonymous forum. The things that people post may or may not be true. Always take what you read from brand new accounts with an extra grain of salt, since you have no posting history available to establish the sincerity of their words. Sometimes they are sharing good news, but sometimes their motives are otherwise. As always, consider the source when weighing advice and information.

I'm not insinuating that any specific post is anything except honest, only that is is possible for it to be otherwise. Sometimes waitlists do go through sudden and rapid movement.

Wow. I guess you can believe what you will. I only posted because I thought I finally had some information that would be useful to others in a position similar to mine (I haven't fully given up hope on getting off of the OSU waitlist). I read a lot of these... I thought I should give back.

Also, there are more criteria than gender and residency. At UC, they said there were 8 different categories. For instance, maybe they needed an IS female and someone with research experience (hypothetical criterion only), and it just so happened to be middle priority before they reached someone who fit. The priority designations seem more like a rough gauge for applicants than a hard-and-fast rule for admission committees. Just a thought.

Another bit of insight about the wait list: As soon as I got the email on May 29th saying I was middle priority, I sent a response asking to be taken off of the list (per the instructions in the email). I never received a response, but obviously they did not do anything about it because I was still called. Perhaps others who asked to be removed remain on the wait list. Just because it doesn't make sense, doesn't mean it isn't true.

Also, I heard that a few days ago my friend, an IS male high priority, was accepted and will be attending Toledo. The instate list is definitely moving.

Thanks for going into more detail. Your right... no one really knows what goes on in admissions. Good luck with OSU's waitlist. I'm becoming more hopeful that I'll eventually get some good news from Toledo. 😳

I called Sandy about my status (IS high priority) and she said the waitlist it is moving "steadily" but may level off in a couple of weeks even though there is still "2 months left". She also said I was in a good position and if I don't hear anything in 2-3 weeks to give her a call back...

I talked with admissions a couple of days ago. They said there are ~25 remaining on the high priority section of the waitlist. I could not get any indication of how many people they tend to accept in the months of July & August. Though, they said the waitlist movement slows down starting July.

Was that instate or out of state, or combined?

Was that instate or out of state, or combined?

I should have asked that clarification when I spoke with them, but it did not occur to me at the time. From the previous posts, it appears they are in the middle section of the IS. Plus, I have no idea how they are balancing the OOS/IS ratio. Its completely unclear to me how they are preceding down the list. Would they pick a low priority IS applicant over a high priority OOS applicant if they need to balance their OOS/IS ratio? I am not expecting an answer to that question, just using it as an example.

Hope to see other posts to see what exactly is going on with these waitlists!

Sandy called me this afternoon and told me I was in! I'm going to TOLEDO! :soexcited:

I was in the middle priority and filled out AMCAS as OOS (TN resident, but I was an OH resident less than a year ago). I am a female with a ton of research experience. Good luck to everyone else!

The 2011 class is bigger than the 2010 by about 20- ours is 170, the 2010 was I believe 150. The eventual goal was to have a class size of 200, but I don't know how long they'll take to get there.

So they took a middle priority OOS female before a high priority OOS male? Hmmmm...

This is the craziest system!

Yes, I've been through it twice and it certainly is a crazy system. I'm not positive how Toledo works, but I have been told most schools want a "well rounded class". Some schools will even tell you (who knows what they really do) that they do not rank their waitlist at all because they pull what they think they are missing from their class off their waitlist. I guess it all depends on who withdraws and (assuming podiewink's hypothetical female with research isn't so hypothetical 😉) it looks like Toledo is just short on girls with research experience this year.

Good luck to your son. I hope he is accepted somewhere soon! I know how horrible the waiting is for everyone!

BTW, THANKS podiewink for turning your offer down 🙂! Good luck with OSU!

Note, I have not verified this with anyone, so this is just theory based off of observation.

I suspect that while there is one waitlist, they match students from a minimum of two criteria when pulling.

Male v. Female
In-State v. Out-of-State

So while there is a single unified waitlist, it can probably be treated as 4 individual waitlists.

Looks like the In-State and OOS Female lists are in the Middle Sections.

Male IS and OOS lists appear to still be in the High Priority Sections. (with reports saying that OOS traditionally moves faster)

As always, take this with a grain of salt.

Summary Table:

Male IS- High Priority
Male OOS- High Priority
Female IS- Middle Priority
Female OOS- Middle Priority

not sure about that... I am oos female high priority w research exp, but I'm still on the waitlist

I have no clue either. The only thing I can think of is they may be considering me IS. That would be a nice surprise as far as tuition goes (doubt I'll get away with that one though). I "officially" moved from OH to TN sometime in July last year so I guess I haven't been a resident for the required 12 months to be considered in-state in TN, but I haven't been in OH either...maybe I don't have a state at all right now...hmmmm...I need to look into that.

Anyway, I'll be sure to let you know if I don't get that packet she claims she sent. I'm still in disbelief!

Have you tried calling Kelly or Sandy? If so, what do they tell you? My son is also OOS High Priority so I was just wondering. We're still waiting.... 😱 😴🙁

which state did you pay 2007 taxes to... that generally determines it.

Unfortunately that would be TN. In reality I'm trying to hold out hope that I'll somehow be considered IS and "save" something like $30,000 my first year, but yeah, I doubt that'll work out for me...ouch
