Anybody know anything about the oto program at the U of U? I always wanted to go back home for residency but have heard very little about the program.
I did a SubI there when I was applying since I have in-laws in Bountiful and it was an easy ride. I thought the program was awesome when I was there but it's changed a lot.
I can mostly speak about the attendings I knew. Clough Shelton is a stud. He approached me at the end of my rotation and asked if I wanted a letter of rec from him, but I already had mine done. He would see 45 patients a day. It was crazy.
Kim Davis was the chair at the time and a great guy. But, he left to be a mission president. Kind of a huge sacrifice.
I think Richard Orlandi is about as cool as they come.
The microvascular H&N guy who was there when I was there left to go to practice in Montana of all places. He was awesome.
The peds service left something to be desired when I was there, but my understanding is that it has grown substantially since and is quite good.
One great asset there is the radiology dept. They had combined radiology rounds with the radiology residents and Ric Harnsberger, perhaps the biggest name in neuroradiology in the world. He would just go through cases and quiz all the residents. I was impressed how well the ENT residents held their own. They also had H&N path rounds where the residents would go through the week's path slides with the pathologist. It was a great learning thing as well, although I think some of the residents hated it. I like seeing my own path so I enjoyed that part.
Overall, the residents back then were happy, worked hard, had good OR numbers, and had tons of extracurricular stuff in the mountains--skiing, hiking, biking, etc.
I ranked it #2, mostly for my wife's sake, but also because I liked it a lot.
That was quite a while ago though, so not the most up-to-date info available.
