Seattle is an interesting program. Although I think it will always be competitive due to the city, there are some clear drawbacks. For example, lack of a chairman, trouble retaining faculty, four hospitals to cover, lots of driving, busy call, seemingly limited funding, high cost of living. Am I way off base on these? I would like to rank this place highly, but these reservations are holding me back. Does anyone out there in SDN land have any thoughts?

I would no overlook Seattle as a solid program. With 4 hospitals (University, VA, Children's, Harborview) you get a great depth of pathology. Overall commuting is not a huge issue as the schedule is ahead and then behind rush hour. q4 first year call is busy as Haborview is trauma 1, but also allows for solid autonomy and experience. The tenured proffessors provide a solid teaching base that will not change over your residency.
As you pointed out- the major drawback is lack of chairman. Frustating that each search narrows to 1 or 2 and then the deal falls apart. This program has the potential to one of the top one day with the right leadership.... In its current state it prepares solid residents with good surgical volume in a great city. PM with questions.
