I am graduating with my bachelors at University of maryland College Park this summer and am getting married and moving to Seattle in August.

My fiance lives and works in Washington and I want to be considered instate in UWSOM because I will actually be living there and it is not just to go to that school but because of my life partner. I do not want to have to be separated from him for Medical School and I want that to be considered in my residency status.

I am not sure what exactly to do. There are rules about living for a year and other things but I feel like this is an exception. How do I deal with this? I don't think its anything unethical but I just want to have a fair chance!!! What do I put on my application? How do I make an appeal for being instate? I have a 3.6 GPA and a 36 MCAT. Please let me know soon!

If you are dead set on UW, you're going to need to work/live in Washington for a year.

To be classified or reclassified as residents, for tuition and fee purposes, students must establish a bona fide domicile in the state of Washington primarily for purposes other than education for the period of one year immediately prior to classification as residents.

Unfortunately, you cannot "marry in" to residency, and without it, your chances at UWSOM are very, very small (1-2 spots in the class of 200). Getting married will help establish domicile but you still need to be in WA for a year.

If you must, go ahead and contact the residency classification office: http://www.washington.edu/students/reg/residency/contact.html

I am a current undergrad and worked for first year programs.
