I interviewed at UW in October, got the "still competitive" letter in late November, and haven't heard a thing since. They are definitely taking their sweet time.

Ahhhhh,

Gotta love it. I'm in the same boat too! So is my friend. Well, we should hopefully hear something within a month!

Good luck everyone!

They told us to expect a decision the first week in April, unless you were on the bubble your own week, and they decide in the interim that a particular week's interviewees are not in your league. 😉

what's "bubble your own week" ???

Actually they told me everyone in the competitive pool would hear "by the first week of April" and possibly sooner, but who knows. They don't seem to be in any rush about it. Any idea what percent of the "still competitive" applicants are offered a spot? Someone told me 30%, but now I'm not sure how reliable that is.

The email I received from UW stated that 32% of the competitive pool either get accepted or alternate status.

I got put on the waitlist, but am a WWAMI applicant. Good luck to everyone else.

Did they rank you?

Yeah, but there is a seperate waitlist for all the different WWAMI states and then the applicants for Seattle.

I was put on the competitive status list back in November and was taken off of it (accepted) three weeks later, so you never know when it's gonna happen.

Good luck!

I opened up a spot when I withdrew mid-January.

Well, my wording was somewhat unfortunate and confusing--sorry about that. What I meant was that you can be accepted from the competitive pool at any time, which is what happened to medilicious. The explanation given at my interview was that the people on the committee keep their own little rank lists, and when that particular week's candidates seem less stellar than someone they saw earlier (regardless of where the applicant is on that person's rank list), they will bring up the previous candidate for discussion, and that person may get admitted at that point.

to those who have gotten in-congrats! question - what were your stats? background? ecs? do they have a huge preference for those applicants from seattle? why do they have different lists?

I can answer about the separate lists. Each WWAMI state pays a certain amount of money for each slot that they want for their state residents. If I remember correctly, it's around $45,000 a year in Idaho ($810,000 for all 18 spots). Anyway, this means that in each WWAMI state, the residents are competing for those purchased slots. Therefore, when the 70+ applicants from Idaho are interviewed, those not accepted or rejected will be put on a separate list for Idaho residents to be accepted at a later time if accepted students opt not to matriculate to UW.

The WWAMI waitlists tend to be sluggish at best. Last year the Alaska waitlist moved two spots...some years it doesn't move at all. They did tell us WWAMI folks exactly where we sat on the waitlist...i.e., the letter said you are number 7 on the list.

I got my decision yesterday. I'm alternate # 8 for Idaho. So unless there's some catastropy that takes out 8 accepted students and/or several of the alternates above me, I don't think I'll be matriculating at the University of Washington this year.

That doesn't seem that low. Won't at least 8 people take their acceptances elsewhere and open up some spots? (I'm still expecting you to come rotate on surgery with me... 🙂 )

Sorry to hear that Wolferman. I'm #4 on Wyoming's alternate list, and there isn't usually that much movement, so I doubt that I will be going there either. It wasn't my first choice, but I still hate school's not giving me love. Good luck!!

Wolferman-

It's not over, yet. Albeit last year was a weird year for Montana, I was accepted off of the wait-list as the #8 alternate, and the #9 alternate was also accepted. Now, we had a few cases of students needing to defer, but the majority of the "declinees" simply chose other institutions over UW WWAMI (Harvard, OHSU to name a few). My wife and I were packed and ready to head to the midwest to a private school which I had been accepted to, when, in mid-June, I got the call from Washington.

It might be a long shot, but it can, and does, happen!

Best of luck in the months ahead.

To Silvertip,

You've given me a glimmer of hope in an otherwise gloomy situation. I'll be checking me mailbox daily until the alternate list is vacated in late September. I really hope I get in. UW was my first choice and I've become really attached (almost obsessed) to that school through all the activities I've done:

1. I did WWAMI Medical Scholars in H.S. (now called U-DOC)
2. Did MMEP last summer at UWSOM
3. Participated in the WWAMI Preceptor match program last Aug. and shadowed a UW alum.
4. I've been doing research alongside a UW professor since Sept.
5. Spoke at the Idaho WWAMI Legislative conference in Boise to help encourage legislators to allocate more Idaho WWAMI seats
6. Took the Idaho WWAMI mini-med school course on cardiac disease last month.

Sadly, it looks as if a few bad grades from my undergrad at MIT are still haunting me. Specifically, I'm guessing that they gave the ExCom enough reason to choose a similarly qualified applicant over myself.

To womansurg,
I'm still looking forward to doing my surgical rotations with you in the Idaho track. But we'll see.

BUMP... for non-WWAMI applicants, the first week of April is fast approaching... anyone hear anything about movement/ranking on the "competitive list"?

Great minds think alike! I was just starting a thread for the countdown 'cause I couldn't find this one! Maybe I should delete it, in order to consolidate? What do you think?

I have been in the "still competitive" pool since November but finally got a letter today - it says I am #7 on the alternate list. Did anyone else hear today? Does anyone know what chance I have of getting in as #7 on the alternate list? Thanks.

It depends on what list you're on: I assume you're on the ranked alternate list (since you got a RANK). Every year, EVERYONE on the ranked alternate gets in, especially if you're that high up, so CONGRATULATIONS!!!

pj--when were you supposed to get your letter (the supp-app website that confirms your complete application tells you)?

Do any of you think it's possible to find out your postion on the alternate lists during the next few months? I'm hoping I may have moved up if some people didn't reserve their spot.

I was supposed to get the letter the first week of April, which is exactly when it came.

Anyone have an idea when people on the waitlists can expect to hear?

I interviewed in October and was "competitive" listed in November. I just got my letter last Thursday saying that I was #11 on the first alternate list.

If there is anyone else out there on the alternate list, we should keep each other informed as we hear more information about where they are. I hope this process is over soon, I knew it wasn't going to end easily  ! Ah well.

I hope to see some of you next fall. Man I love UW.

Go Huskies!!

HI guys,

Wondering if anyone still hasn't heard from the UW. The website said I should have received my letter by last Thursday, but I still haven't received a letter!

Ugh...pretty frustrating.

Congrats to pj and chip for the alternate waitlist! Has anyone been accepted yet??

Hoping for more good news...

Interviewed in October, competitive in November, unranked alternate last week. Ranked alternates always get in. Any idea about unranked? I heard from a current student (who was unranked) that there is still a chance. Any other opinions? Should I start packing to go back east 🙂? Oh- anyone hear back from admissions about meeting with Dr. Samson?

I heard from his assistant that he'll be gone until the end of April.

You were right. Dr. Samson is out of the country until the end of April. Meetings start in May and unranked alternates have first priority- b/c the decision to admit is his now.
