So, I had the meeting at UNLV and everyone there was extremely nice. The attitude and morale was great (maybe because it was a Friday). Anyway, some pretty discouraging news as far as the importance of state residency for UNLV. We all know that they assign a good portion of their seats for in state applicants (~55 out of 75 total). However, here's the kicker....they only get about 125 - 175 applicants TOTAL from NV. With a total of about 3,000 applicants, that leaves around 2800 applications from out of state students for between 20-25 spots. There are better odds at some of the casinos in vegas. :scared:

I'm a dental student here. The average class size is 75 to 79. They fill the class with between 40 to 45 Nevada residents, not 55. But yes, that still leaves 30 to 35 out of state matriculants . Read that carefully, just like any other dental school, they send acceptances to more than that number for both state residents and out of state, but a certain percentage of those people choose UNLV.

Well i know for a fact that they took 60 instate students last year. I was told that by Dr. Brownstein around late may. I was waitlisted as an out of state applicant and I can tell you that if you really want to get into UNLV move to nevada or marry someone that is a teacher in Clark County. Thats what a lot of people are doing from Utah and the biggest reason why the number of instate accecptances went up last year from 50 to 60. Again that is straight from the horses mouth.

Yeah, I was just restating exactly what Dr. Brownstein told me on Friday. I should have moved to Henderson with my dad a couple years ago =( hindsight is 20/20 i guess

can you become NV resident after 1 year and pay in-state tuition? this is my main concern.

As far as I know, yes. There are other ways of obtaining state residency as well. i.e. getting your employer to transfer you to a NV location....

wut about just getting NV license, will that do anything?

That moving there for one year and hoping for residency is kinda tricky. Dr. Ancajas told me usually they make people wait two years from their first paycheck to get residency. So like If you move there in august and apply this year thinking that hey by the time classes start it will be a year and they will consider me instate during the application process then don't count on it.

How can I get residency status other than applying for reclassification after the first year in dental school?
In order to be considered a resident, you must have been living in the state at least 12 consecutive months prior to matriculation. You are automatically considered a resident if you have graduated from a high school in this state.

this is what says on the unlv website. I dont mind paying first year fee as an outofstater, but 2nd year, is this true?

if your asking if you get to pay instate the second year on then yes its true 🙂 one of the positives of UNLV

My bad. They used to take 40 to 45 in-state just a couples years ago. I guess with more in-state applicants, they have begun taking more. Best of luck to you all.
