Hey SDNers,

There are many of us going to UNLV in the next few weeks.

Can anyone shed some light on what the interview is like and what some of the situations are? (# of interviewees, questions, tips, length of tours, etc) I am obviously aware of the feedback section, I am looking for priceless info here!

What hotel are people stayign at? price?
havent booked flight or room and would like to keep it from 250-300 if possible.. hotel with shuttle to school would be good...

I have my interview in about two weeks, but I do live in Las Vegas so maybe I could shed a little light on this deal. The UNLV dental school is in the older part of town. I wouldnt say its in the ghetto but damn near it. But theyve done a lot to that part of town to make it a lot better and there is more on teh way. As far as where to stay I would suggest if you want to be close to the dental school stay at Palace Station. Its about a 5 minute drive from the school and would allow you to get there easily. You can stay on the strip too if you want but be warned that the rush hour in Vegas is all day so just make sure oyu leave the strip in enough time to get to the school. As for the interview I dont really know all that much aside from whats been posted. I have a few friends there that Ill try to get a hold of and ask them more specifics. If you have any other questions PM and Ill answer them to the best of my ability.

Hey guys I had my interview last thursday the 5th. It went very well. First you go to the podium and find your folder with your name tag on it and go sit down. Dr. Ancajas will go over the program and stats of the school. Dr. Brownstein will speak as well. Also everyone introduces themselves, like where your from and stuff.

Then a lady will talk about financial aid. Then Dr. kingsley will talk about the curriculum. He is a really great guy and will motivate you to want to go to UNLV. Seems like he would be a great prof.

Then you have lunch and the students come in and you can ask them whatever you want.

Then once lunch is over you go on astudent tour in groups of about 5 people.

Then come the interviews, one with a student and the other with someone like a professor or administrator. Its preety random in which order you go. In the folder that you get in the begining tells you who is interviewing you. I had a student first then the administrator.

But overall guys, just dont worry. Everyone there is very nice and laid back. It will be a good time and you will leave with a good impression of UNLV...or at least i did

Also in terms of where to stay...Since the interview is relatively early in the morning staying on the strip is fine. If you stay like at stratosphere, mirage, treasure island, or any casino in that area it will take 5 minutes to get there. I was in absolutely no traffic. There was no one on the strip at that time of the morning

Was the student interview more laid back than the faculty interview?

oh.. and would it be a problem if i brought my luggage to the interview? (think im gona rent a car so dont think it will be an issue anyway)

they'll give u that info. dont worry about it. dont worry about the interview at all. i was nervous that i forgot to bring my belt so i wore my ghetto everyday one. thank God for the jacket. the whole day was chill and laid back. i used orbitz.com to book my flight. there are so many online "pricegrabber.com's" for flight/hotel/car rentals. go to the interview feedback section for the link. just have fun there.

good news, it went well.

You can get residency after one year, that drops the cost from like 50 down to 30. Senior year it goes down more to 20.

Can you please explain more about residency?
Does it mean you work while studying?

No, it means you are a Nevadan and pay less tuition because you live there now.

That's pretty sweet. Didn't Milwaukee (or was it Wisconsin entirely?) just change it so you can't do that over there anymore? Also, I know Iowa doesn't let you gain residency. What other states/schools don't let you become a resident?

OHSU doesn't let you become a resident.

Indiana doesnt let you

Temple will if you buy a house (maybe there is a little more to it)

Oklahoma will if you sign an agreement with a local dentist to work with him for something like 2 years after D school (at least thats what my cousin did)

UNLV will let you and if your wife is a teacher you dont even have to wait a year

UNC lets you too after a year
