How hard is it to establish residency at UNLV dental school for second year? I've heard that it's easy but I have to be financially independent. Does that mean I have to take out a loan and my parents cannot support me partially in tuition?

UNLV first year switch is absolutely guaranteed. as long as you file a separate tax return and your parents do not claim you on theirs, you are financially independent. You can still file tax with 0 income. When you move to Vegas, just

1. change to get your Nevada driver license ID
2. get a rent contract with your name on it (and your parents as cosigner if they require income to rent)
3. get bill utility under your name
4. move here in august so you already live here 1 year before you apply in August next year.
5. change your bank account address to your Nevada address.

your parents can help you pay tuition. that does not make you financially dependent. Heck, they can pay your full tuition with cash and you are still financially independent. It is the tax return that matters. Unless you seriously screw this up, there is absolutely no way you won't get in state after 1st year.

the link is the app, you apply via category N.

For category N, you pay OOS tuition first year and in state tuition second year and so on.

even better, you want to get in state for your first year, come to nevada, get a full time job for 2 3 months and get a business license, then apply via category J (the school will not admit you can do this but I know people who did and got in state tuition first year). So like move here in jan, work at walmart or anywhere for 2 3 months, apply in may, work out the kinks and you will be approve in july before class starts in september. They let you know if you qualify or not really quickly so yea. You submit the application to the Vice Dean (Dr. Ancajas). She will reject it initially, just give her the documents and circle category J. The important is get that business license, get payroll check copy, and letter from employer certifying your full time employment.

Best of luck on getting that 40k$ off the first year and dont have to wait until second year!

And,

Welcome to UNLV SDM!

I know this thread is old, but I just saw it and I’m very interested considering I’m starting at UNLV this fall. Is it still possible to pull off this in state residency thing considering it’s already April??

Depending on your risk tolerance. and nothing is guaranteed. I suggest you read the document and consult a lawyer and plan your plan.

You won't get in state tuition the first year (2020-2021) but starting next September (2021-2022) you'll get in state tuition, as long as you begin living in Vegas by this August (need a full year of residency in Vegas to be eligible). I am a soon-to-be D3 and have gotten in state since last September, and I'm originally from OOS.
