UNLV vs Tufts
Started by TalkingTom
Tufts-
Pros -
More established/ well recognized
Opportunities for research greater
Good ability to specialize after
Cons-
I'm from the west coast, weather may be an issue
May be competition for chairs
Half of the school is newly renovated, but half of it is older
UNLV-
Pros
New, awesome facilities
Closer to home (networking, family etc)
Weather not freezing, yet can get pretty hot!
Cons
Fairly new, could be kinks to iron out
Not sure about ability to specialize
This is just my feeling right now.. it is like i prefer tufts for its academic qualities and reputation but UNLV seems to have a nicer facility and location... its tough

the renovations are done, but they still use half of the school that wasnt part of the vertical expansion. So you could be potentially in the part of the simlab/clinic that is older
I'm trying to decide between these two schools too. I think Tufts is a way better school, but my wife is stuck in LA until the end of my first year, so being all the way in Boston would be tough. The cost of living is way higher in Boston too. I'm hopefully doing HPSP, so will have a $2000 stipend...in Boston that will just cover rent for a one bedroom and in Vegas, it can rent a whole house with plenty leftover to live on. On the other hand, Boston is AWESOME and Vegas gets pretty old after awhile. Damn, this is a tough decision...
I asked this before and no one responded. I know it may be a touchy subject and I really don't want to sound offensive, but does anyone know how the large number of LDS at UNLV affects the social aspect of school? I am married, so I don't plan on hitting up the strip every weekend, but I would like to be able to grab a beer after class with my classmates and whatnot. Again, I really don't want to offend anyone and am just trying to figure out which school would be best for me. Thanks.

LDS population is "strong" but it will not affect your lifestyle at all. Most people there that are LDS are pretty cool anyway. I wouldn't let that affect your decision at all. Plenty of people to get a beer with 😉
Tufts
Why does everyone say Tufts? I would pick UNLV for sure.

Sweet. Thanks for the perspective. I hate to say beer is one of my top priorities, but it's just so damn good 😉
Thanks for everyone's opinions. Can you share a little bit more of why you'd go Tufts or UNLV though (instead of just your choice alone?)
I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Tufts. It's a great school curriculum wise and clinic wise. It's located in a great city (Boston). UNLV I've heard some negative things about tuition price hikes and things like that. Also, I think Vegas gets old after awhile IMO. I'd rather live in Boston and have sports teams to root for.
