Is there anyone out there with information about the Residency Program at UNM? If so, your insight is appreciated.

Regional and cardio experience?
Didactics?
Attendings' interactions and willingness to teach?
Overall organization of program?

I'm a student who interviewed there this cycle, so I probably know as much or less than you do about the program. I liked the program when I visited. All the residents and faculty were down-to-earth. Regional was one of the strong points that I remember. Cardio was a weakness for sure. They have to go to Houston in the CA-3 year to get their case numbers.

Cardiac has been a weakness since I interviewed there a long time ago. I remember a new ortho hospital/ASC where residents received an excellent regional experience. If you don't plan on doing cardiac, I think this program is a great choice for people who like the outdoors. 👍
If I remember correctly, there is a fair amount of trauma as well.... which is good.

Are they still taking applicants on the tram to Sandia Peak?

Hi, I'm a fourth year resident at UNM. We actually don't have to do a month in Houston or any away rotation for that matter. Houston Methodist is an option for those residents interested in extra CTV cases such as Transplant. I personally had completed all of my cardiac requirements by the end of my CA-2 year and have continued to do Cardiac Cases here at UNM. I've looked at the numbers and here is how it looks. All CA3s have met cardiac minimums already - less than 1/2 way through the final year. And only 2 out of 8 CA-3 have been to Houston. Hope this helps.
