Hey Guys, saw the unmatched programs on SF and was surprised by how few there were.
I saw that U of Mississippi was on the list. I interviewed there and was really pleasantly surprised by how great it was. Even though I would have loved to stay in the South, it was geographically too far away from everything for me. As a program it was my favorite group of residents, favorite PD and favorite hospital.
They just built a brand new hospital (about half of which is open now), they have a beautiful neuro ICU that they run with pulmonology, their PD is a Neuro-intensivist so they are a big fan of that, the neonatal ICU is really impressive with 90 beds, the PD is really cool and very involved and fun.
The residents that I met were awesome. A great bunch of people- best people I met on the trail. A few from their med school, Tulane med school, a few women from Indian med schools.
The town of Jackson is definitely small but has lots of new restraunts and shopping. It is a nice town that is growing by leaps and bounds. The people were soooo nice as well. I had been worried that is would be old Southern racism but that didn't seem to be the case at all and I talked so as many people as possible about this.
The PGY-1 year is included too.
There is a VA right across the parking lot. They have a clinic in a nice converted strip mall a few blocks away.
They do not pay as much as other programs because of the area. However, all the residents live in nice houses on the lake or on a golf course. The cost of housing is ridiculously cheap. Living like a rich person in a 100K house on the lake.
It was the greatest hidden gem on the trail and won several awards in my "favorite" category.
