Unmatched spots @ great hospitals

Just going over the 2k4 match list from this site

and I noticed a lot of unmatched slots for anesthesiology at some very good hospitals (GW only matched 2 of 7 slots, nyu had 4 openings) just to name 2. How is this possible? Am I just reading this wrong or is there a reason for the unmatched slots. Why would hospitals like these not fill all the slots?

A few hospitals did not rank enough candidates (example - one program with 10 spots, ranked only 50 candidates and got only 4 through the match among those 50). Others keep spots out of the match on purpose. The rest are probably having problems that have been discussed before.

Places do keep spots open for their own grads who haven't matched into surg subspecialties. Rush adopts this sort of policy as do many others I'm sure.

Same here although we have taken transfers from all walks of life (optho, rads, pedi, pedi critical care, IM, surg, neurosurg, FP, and this year the granddaddy of them all - FP/Lawyer). Talk about an interesting mix.

So what you guys are saying is that those aren't the true number of spots available to the public, just the total number of slots they can offer.

Is there any way to tell by just looking at the program how many spots are realisticly available for applicants?

you would have to email the programs directly. most of those unfilled spots (not being held for residents who are leaving another specialty) were filled the day after the match last year.
I have emailed all the programs in NYC for 2005 spots and not one program has an opening so far.
