Hey guys,
so i interviewed at a school back in september. It was an all day thing. After a presentation in the morning we were told that the actual interviews were gonna start at 3pm. It was 250pm at the time. I felt like I needed some coffee or something so I decided to go upstairs to look for a vending machine. Couldnt find one so I decided not to waste time and go back down. Went back down through the elevator and when it opened my interviewer was waiting for me and told me it was time for my interview. It was 258 pm. I was the first one. I subsequently got put on the alternate list. And now im really worried that thats the reason why. Even though I wasn't technically late. What would you guys think if this happened to you? the actual interview went pretty well but i cant help but think that the fact that he was waiting for me at the elevator had a negative impact. He was waiting for me because he knew i had gone upstairs to look for a vending machine because he was the one I asked about where it was and he told me upstairs so he figured i was still up there. But i mean it wasnt 3 yet and i know i shouldnt have taken that risk but i dont know what to think about this.

Does not make sense that you going upstairs to look for a vending machine would have any influence on the decision process. Especially due to the fact you asked the interviewer where it was, and he, fully knowing how far it was and roughly how much time it would take you to come back, told you where it was. It seems if he did not want you to leave the room and just wait, he would have told you so when you asked him in the first place. Thats IMO.

Had you considered that it might have been just a bad interview?

what he said. Maybe it didn't go as well as you think. I doubt that the guy would just write you off for something as trivial as that.

well the interview itself went smoothly but im not sayin but my stats are also low so im hoping that the low stats is the reason why i got alternated and not that incident. I was mainly looking for responses saying it was something trivial so yea that does help me. Im just hoping that something like that isnt a big deal when it comes to decisions. Like i get so paranoid about it, like "what if he wrote "do not accept" on my file cuz of that since they have to put everyone who interviewed on the alternate list if they didnt get in.

Maybe you and the interviewer should have synchronized your watches before you went looking for a refreshment.

At one interview, I went to use the restroom after waiting waaay too long for my turn to interview. Sure enough, when I came back the other interviewees told me they had come to call me for my interview. (such is life?)
Long story short, I got in. I would not think that what you did would be considered when evaluating you.

May be something that might be considered is preparation: dressing correctly, being interview ready, etc.

Good luck to you!

very very very hard to tell. Some interviewers (believe it or not) don't like people stepping out of their locations. These guys think that "oh hes not to worried about this interview, he went walking around for candy....sighhh what a waste of my time"

Others are more understanding, they know that the interview day is not a confinement, and its okay for you to walk around and check out the facility

Went back down through the elevator and when it opened my interviewer was waiting for me and told me it was time for my interview.

And that's when you say "I know! I've been looking all over for you."

Don't worry about it. I can't imagine a school picking its class based on something like that.

maybe the reason you were put on the alternate list has nothing to do with the interview experience at all. I could be a number of factors, and hopefully he realized that you were actually right on time.
