Anyone living in a place deemed "unsafe" by the general concensus?

I committed to a cute little place in a neighborhood that seems a little sketchy, but whatever, it seemed "okay" enough. Really close to the hospital and close enough to the "cool" neighborhood in town.

Just talking to some elderly locals today who said that the particular neighborhood has seen shootings, etc.

Since I will be coming and going at odd hours, now I am wondering if my
mind is exaggerating -

I know that residents are on a budget and don't always live in the most luxurious of places. Anyone feel unsafe in their current locale and decided to stick it out?

When I was a med student two girls decided to live right next door to the med school...Temple med school...in North Philly...not good. They basically barricaded themselves in at dusk every night and bailed on the place as soon as their lease was up.

University Towers, Wayne State University, Detroit. It's located right on the periphery of the undergrad campus (safe). Unfortunately, if you follow Cass Ave directly south a block, its a wonderful place to find a hooker, buy some crack, or get car jacked.
