Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum, so excuse me if I'm posting in the incorrect place or not following conventions. I'm an Illinois resident and sophomore attending Washington University in St. Louis, and I'm unsure whether I would have a chance of being accepted to an MD program. I really want to be a doctor, but I'm afraid that I won't get in somewhere and am questioning whether I should continue with pre-med or focus on another major. My current overall GPA is 3.4 and my science GPA around 3.2 (no C's, just a lot of B's and some B+'s and A-'s). I have yet to take Physics 1 and 2 or Biochem. I have a research position in Wash U's genome institute and will probably have my name on 2-3 publications by the time I'm done there. I have little shadowing experience currently but have lined up something for the summer regarding shadowing. My extra curriculars are okay (club soccer, Greek Life, volunteering to help Philippine foundation), but they are not health related so I'm unsure whether they are factors to consider. I would really appreciate your advice on my specific situation. Thanks.

I graduated in May from WashU and i'm pretty much in your boat GPA wise (applying next cycle). I have friends who have your around stats and have been accepted into medical school. The best resource for you would be the pre-health center and Dr. Downey, they'll give you advice on what classes to take, what schools to apply to and your overall chances. If you look on the Washu handbook, https://prehealth.wustl.edu/Documents/Handbook2017Online.pdf, having around a 3.2 GPA isn't a death sentence depending on what MCAT you end up getting. Also Physics 1 and 2 are the premed GPA boosters, most people end up with an A in both I and II.

If you start aceing things, and do well on MCAT, then there will be MD (and all DO) schools that will show you some love.

As of right now, those numbers are lethal for mD, but fair for DO.
