Hi all,
I plan on applying to dental school this year and I'm not sure if I should include on my application somewhere that I suffered from depression for some time in college. I'm from southern california, love to surf, free dive, take photos, etc and I ended up going to school (financially the cheapest b/c of scholarships) in the Northeast near the canadian border where it is snows a serious amount and is dark and cloudy for most of the school year. As a result of the sudden change and being away from family, etc I was in some major depression and suffered from seasonal affective disorder. It got really bad to the point I was recommended for anti depression pills but I didn't want to take them at such a young age and was afraid of the all the side effects.
My sophomore year hit the hardest because we had a really bad winter and my grades suffered. I averaged a 3.0 and I happened to take a lot of the harder pre reqs that year (orgo, biochem, differential equations). However, I somehow managed to bring my GPA up to above a 3.5 by averaging over a 3.7 my last 4 semesters of college (took 20-22 credits each semester) through pure determination and a great group of friends who supported me, although I was still miserable my entire time in college.
So my question is, do I mention about my depression on my application? I know my depression had an effect on my academic performance during my sophomore year but I am unsure if I should mention it and explain it on my application for later this year. Would dental schools view my depression negatively because I feel like they could see my mental disorder as something that could hinder my abilities as a doctor (how are you going to treat patients effectively if you are prone to depression?) Should I be mentioning my depression on my application? Thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated
