I am waitlisted at TCOM, and it's likely that some of those accepted to the UNT post-bac program will hold a waitlist spot from a TX medical school. If so, there is a chance that a small number of them may be pulled from a waitlist within the next couple of months. With this consideration, it's possible that the UNT admissions office may not want to reject some or any applicants until a specific number of applicants have accepted the offer of admission.

Thanks nontrad... That makes me feel a little better. Thank you! 😉

.....Except for the fact that the admissions people have said "ALL DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE." I guess the way I hear it is: "We have divided everyone into two groups: ACCEPT and REJECT" lol 🙂

But yeah, I suppose that does make sense... I just hope that they actually call it a "waitlist" with a letter stating so. That would be soooooooooooo much better than hearing what I'm hearing now: total silence and having them completely ignore me.

When I talked to the admissions office about TCOM's waitlist, she said to look for movement arouond June. I know somebody has already posted that they were pulled off TCOM's waitlist, but if we're expecting more movement in June, then I would imagine at least a few seats in the post-bacc will open up. I think DaveinDallas and I are in the same boat here: waitlisted at TCOM AND accepted into post-bacc.

So Sparkles, I wouldn't give up hope just yet. Think about some alternate plans, and put them into action, but don't commit to anything before you know for sure your status at UNT HSC.

Best of luck, dear.

Thanks labrat!

Has anyone received the official letter from the post-bacc program? Positive or negative?

all I've gotten is a phone call so far, and I'm only the next zip code or two away.

But hey, it took TCOM three weeks to send me my wailtist letter, so I'm not holding my breath....

Maybe no news is good news? (For people like me who haven't heard a word)

I'm just going by what the admissions people said- that we would hear of a decision BY MAY 1st.

Maybe I should call tomorrow? 😕

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna call tomorrow and see what is going on. I haven't heard a word and I've tried emailing- they just ignore me. 🙁

Hey,

Is anyone from Forth Worth or who knows where they're gonna stay? I've never been there and no clue on how much apts usually cost.

Thank you 🙂

Okay- So I called today to find out what the heck is going on.....

They told me that the letters have NOT been sent out, but they will be sent out by the end of this week.

Regarding MY situation:
I told them that I was under the assumption that I was rejected to the program because I did not get a call. I asked if I could still attend the school en route to another program or something like that... and that I needed to know so I could make my plans... They told me that I'm "jumping the gun" on that. They wouldn't (or couldn't) tell me much, but they said I'm "in the group" that will be offered admission into an "alternate program for a masters degree." They wouldn't tell me any more than that.

I suppose I am pleased with that decision. If I can't attend the official "post-bacc", I would still like to do another program because I won't be applying to medical school for another year anyway. That will give me two years to complete it. I'm sure other people are in this same boat. So-- YEEAA!!! I'll be moving to Ft. Worth too! LOL!

However, I hope they didn't just say that to shut me up. LOL. There better be a letter to back that up!! 😉

I can't wait to show you folks around Fort Worth. UNT HSC is in the cultural district, and minutes from downtown. The housing right around the school can be a little pricey; it's sort of an "old money" area, but I know students are able to find some small apt. complexes or rent houses/garage apts. to rent. Overall, it's really easy to find cheap, safe housing within 15 minutes of the school.

You guys are going to love my city...😍

Thanks labrat!!!! You're a sweetheart! 😀

I'm really excited even though I'm probably not in the post-bacc program!!

UNT= University of North Texas
TCOM= Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine

We are talking about the post bacc program at the UNT Health Science Center.

Nice to meet you! 🙂

Thanks nice to meet you too. I am going to the Georgetown program this fall. I did quite a bit of research but I didn't come across this program in Texas. It appears to be quite selective. Is is primarily for in state students? I'm just curious to hear how other people are going about this post bac thing

hey again! I'm not sure how selective it is, but being a state school, I would guess that they would prefer in-state students (again, not TOO sure about that). As you have probably read before: I'm pretty sure I didn't get into the program so I'm probably just going to do a regular 2-year masters in biomedical science for post-bacc.

My current plan is this: Get my EMT certification this summer, work as an ER tech or EMT in fort worth while going to grad school.... and applying to medical school NEXT summer for the entering class of 2007. 😀 I really REALLY need to improve my application, hence the post-bacc!

Good luck at Georgetown!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Sparkles, where are you doing your EMT certification at? 😛

Hi Lian! I'm taking the EMT-B training from June 2 to August 30 in Richardson, TX.

not to get this confused: UNT is a whole system. There is University of North Texas in Denton (and a campus in Dallas). UNT HSC refers to the grad school that is on the same campus as TCOM, in Fort Worth. IF you ever see me referring to UNT, UNT HSC, or TCOM, I'm referring to my undergrad school, the graduate school (like the post-bacc program), and the med school (where I'm waitlisted), respectively.

THere's a ton of apartment complexes of reasonable rents if you search for areas labeled "west Fort Worth." These put you 10-15 minutes away, and traffic usually isn't very bad in the mornings. As far as living right next to campus, your best bet is to drive around the areas and look for rental signs. Like I mentoned before, the areas immediately around the school can be pricey, but there are duplexes, complexes that other students have been able to find, as well as garage apts., etc.

If you get to visit before you move here, check the student commons areas and corkboards. People that are renting out rooms, garage apts., etc. will often place ads here. I've found that the newspaper isn't nearly as good as taking a drive. You could also pick up a Fort WOrth apartment guide. They're free, and nearly everywhere, if you happen to be around the city. Or I'd be happy to send you one.

And where in Richardson might that be through? I've heard that methodist dallas has a summer program where you can get everything done for EMT-B in one summer. I've thought about getting that sort of certification just for fun. It would be a nice intro into emergency medicine. I know of some talk of increasing the level of training of emt/parameds to turn them into 'field doctors' of sorts.....

I think it's just through the Emergency Medical Training Services (?)

The website is www.emts911.com
Click on **Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)** Under *other courses*

The June 2005 class is the one I'm taking (I think its the only one listed)! 🙂

It's official. I received the letter today. It was postmarked on the 6th. So, everyone should receive their letters over the next couple of days. Congrats to everyone who is accepted!

I'll be doing the masters in biomedical sciences... So its official that I was "rejected to the post-bacc" BUT accepted to the Masters in biomedical sciences program! I'm still happy! 🙂

Fort Worth, here I come! YEEEAAA! 😀 🙂 😀

I'm heading up there this weekend, May 14th. If I find anything, I'll be sure to let everyone know 🙂 Right now, i'm looking for a two bedroom apt that is 15 mins away from school. I hope that's not too hard to find.

Now that we have a shoe in with TCOM, what schools are you guys reapplying to?
Does it make sense to still reapply to every school in TX especially when money is an issue? Cause we won't know if we are accepted to TCOM until May of 2006, right?

We apply through TMDSAS as usual, and UNTHSC asks that you set TCOM #1 on the list. Since it is not a requirement to set TCOM as #1, you could potentially match to another Texas school. I'm not certain how the May of 2006 evaluation ties in with the match, but it might be a wise choice to apply to at least a couple of additional Texas schools (especially if you would rather go to another school). Does anyone understand how the May of 2006 evaluation ties in with the TMDSAS match?

Going to a bac program at UNT doesn't meant that you're a shoe in for TCOM. Besides, even if TCOM asks us to rank them as #1 schools aren't suppose to know what our ranking of them is anyway. Does anyone need a roomate next year? I'm kidna broke and don't really feel like paying bills and rent by myself.

Thanks 🙂

BTW: What is this that I hear that after May 15, one can't hold multiple positions at a medical school so those on waiting lists may have a higher chance of getting in?

I received my letter today! Did anyone have the 'financial aid checklist' that was supposed to be enclosed, because I didn't get one.

A girl from my undergrad is in the PBC program now. She interviewed at other med schools while in the program, so people do apply to other Texas schools. In regards to being accepted to TCOM, if you have the 3.5, I don't know what else they 'evaluate' in order to offer one a seat in the incoming class. I'll try to do some investigating 🙂

I need a roomie too! 😀

Female roommate in a 2 bed, 2 bath, close to campus, reasonably priced, preferably no pets.

Any takers? 😀 😀 😀

You don't agree that going to the Post BAC program give you an edge for admission to TCOM the following year? I thought the whole point of this program was to improve your chance to matriculate at TCOM the following year.

it gives you an edge, but you're not a shoe in, unless by "shoe in," you meant "foot in the door," but why are we talking about feet, anyway? 😕

I think it's merely semantics.....

I believe there are a certain number of seats set aside in the entering med school class for those matriculating from post-bacc...does anybody know how many, and how many people are accepted in the post-bacc class? I'm sure the odds are in our favor, coming from post-bacc, as opposed to the rest of the applicant pool, but how much so?

Ok, since no one else has brought it up.....

How about a post-bacc get together here in the near future? Nothing fancy, just a get together and get to meet and greet. I don't know if the school is doing anything for the class formally, but hey, I'll be the social animal I wasn't in high school and bring it up.

Anyone interested?

I'm glad you brought it up, something like this should be fun 🙂 how about the first day of school? hahhaha, j/k.
I'm available anytime in July since that is when I will resign from my job. I believe my future roommate will be available then as well.

I second the motion to put Dave in charge, and I also support the meeting of the post-bacc minds (or of anyone else in this thread who wants to come, post-bacc or not) 😀

Sounds like a great idea. txdoc and I would enjoy the opportunity to meet everyone.

we should start a separate thread for this.

So far it's:
Dave,
labrat
txdoc
txnontrad
DocKW
MrBoxy

Do y'all want to keep this a 'post-bacc only' meet, or a Dallas/Fort Worth meet?

By asking that question labrat you are now vice-social chair...tag, you're it.

My thoughts are like this:

I think we need to meet and get to know each other just for giggles.

I'd also like to see if people want to work together in some sort of study group or whatever. I know we're all kinda competing against each other for seats in the class but I'd like to see everyone succeed and get in. I figure that I might need some help understanding something that's second nature to someone out there and vice versa. Help each other and everybody wins.

In terms of social activities, hey I'm all for working towards making this post-bacc class something to be remembered in terms of the 'group cohesion'. I'd personally like to leave a legacy that people at TCOM will remember for a while (in a good way, not an animal house way) about the class of '05 to '06.

Okay, so whos' with me? Was it over when the germans bombed pearl harbor? Let's do it.......whoops, wrong speech....

Seriously, in may there's memorial day and in july it's independence day. August 10 is orientation and the last week of july is probably going to be moving, getting settled in, etc. Are we all thinking maybe late June or after 4th of July or what?

I heard from somewhere that some of those classes will be with the TCOM medical students. How are they expecting us to get a 3.5 GPA taking medical school level classes considering that I know of very few people who get all A's and B's in medical school?

HAve you guys heard of this?

Dave: So let's keep it to thread occupants for now; and branch out later....

Let's pick a date between Memorial day and July 4th...any objections?

I have a friend who is in MSI at TCOM now, and is seriously impressed with the way the post-bacc students are advancing. She says there a lot of people in her class that wish they would have had a year of post-bacc before med school, because the post-bacc students are at the top of their classes (in med school).

I think the major thing is the culture shock from premed to med school, and post-bacc seems to alleviate some of that pressure, as well as familiarize oneself with the material.

How about that weekend before orientation, since everyone will be in Fort Worth by then. For us out-of-towners, it might be harder to get there by July 4th. . .just a suggestion

Dave, I hope your mentality of 'cohesiveness' will exude throughout our entire class. If we all can work cooperatively toward our common goal of becoming physicians, we will be more likely to achieve it, right? 🙂

I am in. Any Time for me just pick a date and a place. I'll be pretty busy this summer but who cares. I actually get my bachelors August 12 and start the post bac August 15 😱 .

haha.....I'm in the same boat, but at least I don't have to relocate, like others here.
