UNTHSC MS Med Sci Program 2013-2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Best of luck to everyone that has applied! Hopefully people will start hearing back today! 🙂

Just got silently rejected. Best of luck to the others.

Will it change where it says "This application is complete"? Or is there another place I should be looking/do other applications say "under review" or just complete?

Check UNTHSC application status. No email.

Mine still has the green dot next to it, but nothing else has changed. I've checked the "application status" and "Student center" links, but nothing has notified me of any decision. Where does it say that they can't grant you an acceptance?

I applied for the 2013 cycle of the DO program, and they marked it as "reviewed" (didn't get in obv), but for MedSci program, they only label it as "received." And I was complete sometime mid-November.

Also, when was your application complete?

Under application status. If it still says you're app has been received it means they haven't made a decision on you yet. Mine says "We are unable to admit every applicant due to a limited number of seats available. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you admission at this time."

Sorry to hear that. Would you mind sharing your stats i.e MCAT score / GPA please!!

Ugh, that sucks. I hate hearing about people getting denied. It's a bit odd how they didn't even send an e-mail though.

What's plan B for you?

No worries for the question. As another member PMed me, I will copy and paste my response.

I was at the borderline for both the MCAT and GPA scores. I hope that gives you an idea. I was not a competitive applicant at all.....
From what I understand you need 2 out of 3 things to get into the program (MCAT/GPA/and a combination of LOR, essay, and experience) I only had 1 of those 3 things. I plan on retaking the MCAT and also taking some upper level science courses and getting A's in them this Fall and try again.

Best of luck to everyone else.

So no acceptances today....? Man this is frustrating...

This is my second time applying, I had that same decline message back in 2012. I am a career changer, so all I had when I applied the first time was the bare minimum prereqs, and no strong medical exposure outside of volunteering at the hospital. I did the same thing you plan on doing, currently finishing up some upper level science courses, got an additional LOR, and got a bit more experience. I don't know if I will make it in this year, but I really hope I do. This year has been ruff, quitting my job to attend school full-time.

Best Wishes to you!

I am in a very similar boat... I did not decide to do pre-med until my senior year. There were some upward trend for my GPA, but I am assuming not strong enough. I got some catching up to do!

Anyone think they'll notify people of decisions on the weekend?

I doubt it. I think it's pretty much a business day 9-5 kind of thing.

Hey guys! I got an acceptance email! Did anyone else hear back?

You had me anxious, so I went to check my status on the portal...aaaand it was still TBD lmao.

But yeah, do you mind giving us your stats and app completion date, por favor?

I submitted in early January

I submitted early-mid November, and I haven't heard anything yet. I guess they're not going by the policy of "the earlier you submit, the earlier you'll hear back."

It seems to me (from looking at the thread from previous years) that they go by "the earlier it's submitted, the earlier it gets LOOKED at" and then they can respond to you at any time. Not the most useful or reassuring, but that's how I'm interpreting it. I was complete Jan 2 so I'm incredibly anxious to hear back.

If it's any reassurance, when I did the program last year I was accepted on April 13 after being complete mid-January. I think the majority of acceptances went out around that time for the 2012-2013 school year.

Get used to waiting though, it's 100x worse waiting to hear back from TCOM after applying through the program.

I completely agree with this. Almost done with physio/anatomy and haven't heard anything.

Hey Utsktsk... Easiest way to get a quick reply (relatively) from TCOM is to get rejected. I heard nearly as fast as some pre match offers! Haha!

Consider yourself lucky, jerk face!

(Just so nobody gets up in arms, Utsktsk and I are friends, I am not really calling him a jerk face. In fact, he is gorgeous...)

would love to see something different right about this time. like a green check mark 😉

Where do you guys see this green dot? All it says on mine is that the application has been received and it is completed?

- Being paranoid about green dots

When you log in to your hsc, click the HSC Admissions tab, then in the middle of the page that loads click the Student Center link underneath the app status link. Scroll down to see the dots and someday, a coveted green check mark.

I suppose the green check mark comes after (maybe the same time) as the acceptance email but I'd be the wrong guy to give that kind of info.

Some get the check mark before the email. I got the email and then went online and saw the check mark

Do they send out rejection emails? Anyone know?

Do you know if the people, denied acceptance, also get e-mails too?

edit: ninja'd by Mx300!

Sorry I don't know about that

Things are moving pretty slow for us this year. Almost April and only one acceptance that we know of on this thread and one rejection.. I'm hoping to hear something this Friday at least, about a new batch. Maybe we will hear about one more acceptance..

I wonder how many people that have received acceptance / rejections DON'T use SDN or have an account here, though. Granted, Texas is a big place (so most applications are prob Texans), and this particular program in Texas is probably the best / most popular (if not one of) options for trying to get into medical school after completing undergrad.

Haven't checked yet, but is there a new group for this upcoming year, for this program on Facebook?

What does the financial aid situation look like? The scholarship deadline passed right?

I'm pretty sure they go by FAFSA, so hopefully you filled that out for all the programs (read: schools) that you applied to.

Thanks everyone for the congrats.

Hopefully everyone hears back sometime soon! It seems like they are really behind this year compared to the previous years.

The facebook group still isn't up. Based on last year, it wasn't up for a while. Probably when there are more acceptances.
