UNTHSC SMP for MD?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That program is mainly for DO schools, and I think it would be more helpful for DO applicants.

uhhh not really. Most of the people who finish the program with a 3.5 and above end up going to allopathic schools in texas, with some going to TCOM

I thought this too, but I couldnt find statistical data that showed what percentage of students got into allopathic schools.

i saw that you had several interview invites.
Mind me asking your stats?

Dont quote me on this but when i was at a conference at UNTHSC last summer they gave the numbers of

"People who completed this program with a 3.5+ had a 95% acceptance rate to a medical school"

Apparently they also get an interview at TCOM sometime later ? (someone correct me if i am wrong)

Lets just say its 3.0+ and 30+ 😉

well im already in the program. Apparently a 3.5 is a guaranteed invite for an interview.

However I am not as interested in a DO degree because I want to practice international medicine in India later on which does not accept D.O.s to practice medicine.

LOL was the GPA somewhere around mine or higher? i should be able to get a 30+.

you can always PM me your answers if you dont want it to be public.

I thought that the program at NT was a DO SMP, and that generally DO SMP are most helpful for DO schools. I'm sure that there have been people who were accepted at MD schools though from that program. I would check with the staff there and ask them.

I'll chime in again.

From talking with the folks at tcom, they said most of the smp graduates matriculated to the other Texas schools. In fact they encourage that

I always found that ironic... considering the US accepts MD's from tons of crap foreign MD schools and our DOs are still probably better trained.

If you wanna stay in Texas, it's pretty well regarded at TX MD schools, at least all the ones I interviewed at. For OOS MD schools, I can't say the UNT name would pull much weight.

Actually, the status is "undetermined" as no DO has attempted to become licensed in India yet. Also, you need to become a citizen of India to become licensed in India (whether MD or DO). Obviously, it's not going to be easy to become the first US DO to be licensed in India. I imagine it would be a long process.

There are osteopaths in India. However, they're people who have completed an allopathic MBBS/MD and then specialized in osteopathy during their post-graduate medical education.

I'll chime in again.

👍

Im enrolled in this program (its an SMP) to raise my gpa and to show adcoms that I can handle a med school courseload.

I wanted to know whether anyone here had taken this or known anyone who was able to be accepted into an MD school because of it?

thank you.

👍 Two guys that work (worked?) in my research lab are also in that program. BOTH got into MD schools. UTSA and Texas Tech.
