UOP interview spots for out of state applicants

HI guys
I was look up some stats in the newest ADEA official guide to dental school, and I noticed that UOP has the highest ratio of applicant vs interview offered for out of state applicants. It's something like for every 27 OOS applicant there is 1 interview spot. Compared to other large private schools, this ratio is twice as high. Can someone with inside knowledge explain to me why it's so hard to get a interview for OOS applicant from UOP? Isn't private schools suppose to have no preference for instate or outstate applicants?

UoP generally accepts something like 95% of students they interview barring any serious interview mess-ups. Thus, it would make sense they they screen their applicants more carefully on the front end. In fact, they even told me in my interview that pretty much everyone in the group was in.

From your experience what factors would you say contribute most to getting an interview @ UoP. This school really interests me because of their three year curriculum and (from what i've heard) looking at upward trends. At your interview/orientation did they mention anything in particular they're looking for?

People do receive interviews without connections at UoP, especially cali residents, but that is where luck comes into play.

I would suggest visiting the school, and making them aware of your interest well in advance. If you do this and get a high DAT score (DAT is weighted more than GPA from what I've heard), you stand as good of a chance as anyone at getting an interview. Nothing, however, is a guarantee especially with this school.

Will visiting school really help establishing connections? I assume there must be a lot of people visit every year. And when it comes to giving out interview invites, how do the adcom even remember who you are and what you said? Plus I cant imagine just visiting a school alone will get you any closer or establish any connections to the adcom. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Most schools keep a record of who visits. Each time I visited a school, I filled out an information sheet that they kept on file.

How much do these visits matter? It varies from school to school. For example, at my state school, interview invites are based on numerical scores calculated from GPA, DAT, and nonacademic experiences. Visiting the school will not affect your score and therefore not affect your chances of being interviewed. Other schools, however, may pull the apps of those who visited and have connections to review those first, thus increasing chances of an interview invite. Most schools, and UoP especially, strive to interview those who will most likely accept an offer. It would not reflect well on a school if they had to make 300 offers to fill a class of 75, for example. Visiting a school demonstrates interest and thus a higher likelihood of accepting an offer if extended.
