UoP Students/Grads

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Info like how are the classes, especially since it's a three year program, the atmosphere of the campus, how were you able to manage a social life outside of school....stuff like that

That's a pretty general question...is there anything you'd like to know about specifically?

Dude, just tell her the usual.

1) Very little clinical exposure. Almost 100% of our grads have to specialize. There is a reason it's called the Harvard of Pacific Heights.
2) The faculty are really anal and yell at you all the time. But we don't pay alot for tuition so I don't really care.
3) Research is mandatory and you will be assigned to a lab when you start 1st year.
4) We have 7/9 specialties here at Pacific and you therefore get to watch all kinds of cool cases. That way you know exactly what they are doing when you refer EVERYTHING out when you are a GP.
5) Board scores average about 74 the first attempt, so by my math....at least half fail the first time around.
6) Almost everyone comes from outside of California, so you get this East Coast vs West Coast gangs that pop up within the first few weeks. Not pretty at all.
7) Speaking of pretty, that is something we don't describe our female students as.

And we expect this from a School Admin....😱

Yup. Although next week I'm thinking about going back to Pre-Dent to ruffle some feathers!

It's SDN, and I'm not really Admin, I might not even be at Pacific.

ok then can someone PLEASE tell me an HONEST opinion of their UoP experience???

Classes themselves are pretty easy, not many difficult concepts. There are just a lot of them that you have to take at the same time, so its a lot of studying and working in the lab. Managing your time effectively is key. Overall, the school is very nice to the students. In my opinion, they spoil the students to the point where many expect too much and act like a bunch of brats. Social life depends on how smart/talented you are and how well you want to do in class. If you just want to pass, you'll find plenty of people who have time to party with you. If you want to be #1 in the class, there are a fair number of gunners that you can rub elbows with as well.

Thanks for the info...any other UoP students with their experiences??

Are there really lectures from 8-5pm every day? Is it possible to be one of those people that teaches themselves through provided lecture slides and other materials?

Yes there are really lectures 8-5, well at least during your 1st year. Some of the classes have "attendance policies" where there are quizzes or sign in sheets to make sure you are coming to class. But most of the classes have powerpoints available, so it is very easy to teach yourself for some classes. I slept through my fair share of classes, but was able to effectively teach myself outside of class, and still did pretty well. On the flip side, there are other classes where it is best to be there and take your own notes to learn.

I just want to put my .02 cents in here. I am about to graduate, and I am so glad I am in a 3 year program. I cannot imagine going through another year right now. But the 3 years here have been great. SF is one of the best cities to live in (my opinion), and the school really treats you well. They listen to the students, and are constantly trying to improve the school any way possible. Overall, I think most people here are very satisfied with the school. I know I am.

I totally agree...I'm finishing year 2 and it's unbelievable that I'll be in your position in 12 short months. Thank god I've got some good cases lined up for next year.

Now, how do I prevent this INCOMPLETE in restorative?!

I don't think there was a day that went by during that horrible first year where I didn't regret going to Pacific. Now that I'm closing out my 2nd year, I can't imagine being elsewhere. My 2007 grads from college are getting excited about entering their dental school clinic, I'm already beginning my countdown!

you need to seat 2 crowns and do at least 2 operative test cases before 3rd year in order to not get an incomplete in restorative.

I know you were joking, but 1st year total cost at UOP is about $90k. Over 3 years with interest and tuition increases, you are looking at close to $300k. It's a great investment for a 3 years education, but it's another thing to walk through it.
