Hey, I think the best thing is to be real. Learn as much as you can in your undergrad years and don't forget to have a good time too. It is suppose to be the best time of your life. When I say have a good time, join a sports team, run a 10K or a marathon! take wood shop and make a bird house or metal shop and learn to weld (they had that at my college), brew some beer, if thats not your thing, make root beet, paint, join a lab and do some research, read some fiction books, take some classes that interest you, get a minor in whatever not science, go out and socialize, build friendships, remember that people skills is important as a dentist, you're going to have to interact with people all the time. Some people might disagree with me and say that you need to ace all your science classes and focus your life on fulfilling your application for Dschool, no doubt that will help getting into Dschool, but don't let it take away from your experience. Yes, you do need to do well in your science classes, try to get As and Bs, get 20+ on all the DAT sections, and do multiple dental internships to see if you actually like the profession. I guess the key thing is, distinguish yourself. My hypotheses is that once you get past the "numbers" during the application process the admissions board will look closely at your application along with hundreds of others, if you have something interesting about you and you show them why you want to be a dentist, why you would be a good dentist and what have you done to demonstrate your skills, that will make you stand out. Rarely I see advice on having a good time on this forum. Good luck. BTW I got into one of the UC Dschools you're talking about.
