WashU is decent...period. Sure they have Dehner but they seem to have trouble holding on to their staff pathologists. My $0.02! (PM me for more info)

I dunno about UPMC, but they are well known for their fellowships more than their residency.

Remember...just my opinion.

I interviewed eight places last year and Wash U was the only one I didn't rank. The residents seemed very unhappy to me and I just had a bad vibe. I know they are a strong program and produce excellent pathologists, but just was not for me.

If I could go back in time I wouldve gone to the most unpleasant reasonably well known program, something that American med grads were avoiding like the plague. Someplace with...a derm fellowship where I knew all the internal candidates would be non-English speakers, because in the land of the blind, even the one-eyed man is king.

In essence, a place like WashU is nearly perfect. Cheap enough to buy a condo during residency as well.

You would be hard pressed to find someone that recommends Pitt over Wash U. That being said, you will have to decide if the Wash U "personality" is for you. I've had multiple discussions with people who trained at or were on faculty there and some people really loved it. That being said, one person made the following comment: "it's a great place for pathology, but Wash U has a real penchant for hiring dinguses in all of their departments." My advice would be to check it out for yourself and decide for yourself.

SO what LADoc is saying that for IMG, a place full of IMGs is perfect especially if it is a big name like WU.......A good point....what i did not understand from cameronfrye is that i have to deside if WU personality is for me or not.........what kind of personality is that....lol..could you please explain that for me.....and regarding the faculty so are they dinguses with the residents too? thanks guys

There are a lot of rumors I have heard about WashU's program. But I doubt anyone will come out and say what they really mean.

Read between the lines.

what kind of rumors

nothing I'm willing to say publically.

ok ok...their training is very good. But that can be said for lots of places.

that's all i will say.

let's just put it this way...i heard there were like 10 people from WashU applying to path this year. Let's see how many of them stay at the institution come match day.

I met some of them on my interview day and from talking to them, they were not keen on the idea of staying. It was more of a courtesy interview on their part.

UPMC is a great residency program from what I can see. I interviewed at 23 places last year, all across the country. I admit, I was only at each place for a day or two, and it is hard to tell that much from such a short visit, but UPMC came out at the top of my list. Since I couples matched, I was also limited by my husband's surgical interviews as to some of the interview offers I could accept...We didn't apply to SLU, and he didn't get an interview at WU so I had to miss out on WU, for instance, so I can't be much help there.🙁

The residents here are (usually) happy and friendly (everyone has bad days now and then), as are most of the attendings. We work hard, but everyone is so pleasant, wanting to teach and to learn, that it doesn't seem so terrible. (For some perspective, my husband is a general surgery intern here and there are weeks when I work more hours that he does...on some of the surg path rotations and hemepath, we come up against the 80 hour work week. But, I wouldn't come here if you don't want to work hard from time to time.

Again, if you have specific questions about the program, e-mail one of our chief residents...they are all super friendly, or you can PM me.
