Should I treat this like a formal job interview? I'd rather not roll up with a tie on. Has anyone felt like they over/under dressed for this interview?

its a volunteer interview...

it should be somewhat casual. i did not wear a suit or anything. just normal clothes man. dont sweat it.

mine was at a childrens hospital and knowing kids would be around i didnt want to overdress and seem impersonal...

but childrens hopsital or not...i dont think a suit is necessary. just me tho.

I wore a nice sweater and khakis for mine and it worked out fine. Although I do the suit and tie thing for job and med school interviews, I felt comfortable being more casual for the volunteer interview.

slacks, shirt or polo shirt should be fine. Don't dress down. You are applying for a position which is like applying for a job, I think semi-dressy is the way to go.

I always just wore jeans and a t-shirt. I have never had a problem.

I am in a leadership position at a volunteer program and we assign points for "proper attire." They might too. Dress nice - like a med school interview. Do you mind telling me which program?

wear the same thing that you should for your med school interviews. that is, your best suit... and what's that you may ask? of course, it's your BIRTHDAYS SUIT... just make sure you give it a good press under the iron first. don't wanna look wrinkley, do ya?

ok, now that i have that out of my system, if you're that unsure, just call the secretary of the interviewer and ask what would be appropriate attire.

THanks for the suggestions...If wearing something nice makes the difference between me doing something somewhat interesting or something unbearably boring, then it's worth it to put in the extra effort.

If it's an inner-city hospital, you might be risk for getting AIDS. So, wear a condom.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHahahahahahaha!!!

That's great!!

it depends on what kind of volunteer position you're applying for. when i applyed to do clinical volunteer, i just wore nice pants and a nice short sleeve shirt (it was summer and i had to take the subway). for this other program that i'm thinkign about, it's more research oriented, and it's highly selective, so that is more professional dress. if you're applying for a more selective program, than try to look more prefessional.

The woman at the office told me over the phone to dress "neat."

to me neat does not mean suit, or even sportcoat, or even tie. it means nice slacks and a nice shirt, like what you might wear to a play. in fact, i think play attire is a good description of what to wear. i may get objections to this, but i think overdressing for a situation can be just as bad as under-dressing. awkward works in both directions.
