I have an interview coming up at a school I honestly didn't even think was going to offer me one. I have a 3.1 science and 3.5 overall with a 19 dat. Nontraditional with a ton of hospital experience and extracurricular. I am not super nervous for the interview but I almost feel like I don't deserve it and feel like what's the point if there are people interviewing with 25 dats and 3.9s.

You already know what the answer to your question is; students who scores 25s on sections of the DAT and have a 3.9 GPA are an exceptionally rare minority, there have been people accepted into dental school with statistics far lower than yours, you worked hard for your grades and DAT score, so be proud of yourself and do your best!

You wouldn't have an interview if they weren't prepared to accept you. 4.0 and 25dat is great but mosttem are 22yr kids who have been in academia their entire lives ( not a bad thing, just a fact). Being non traditional with experience you stand out as an adult. Play the cards you are dealt. Be yourself. You will be a leader and set the example for you class. Good luck.

Congrats on your upcoming interview. The selection process is very competitive, and the fact that you were chosen means that the admissions committee already sees qualities in you that make you worth accepting over many other applicants they screened and did not invite for an interview (and I'm sure some of them had higher stats than you). So get this "I don't deserve this" nonsense out of your head! The bottom line about your stats is that they were good enough to get you an interview. Keep in mind that though the school tends to accept a certain average GPA/DAT, the ADEA guide to dental schools show that most accept a wider range, and this is important.

I truly believe that an applicant can have a 25 DAT and a 3.9 GPA and be horribly ill-suited for dentistry. These figures by themselves do not make someone more worthy of admittance to dental school than someone with lower stats. During your interview, show the interviewers how your unique strengths and life experiences have prepared you for dentistry and that you can offer the school something that goes far beyond numbers. Make sure to prepare well for your interview and good luck.

Being a dentist is more than just acing your DAT and scoring high GPA. Its also about being personable, sociable, and above all confident in yourself and your decision making. If you walk into that interview with that mindset you have now, you're right, theres no point for you to interview because the interviewers will see that in you. Just be who you are, show them the person they see on paper having all these ECs with life experience and you'll be just as competitive as the 3.9s.
