Hi Everyone,

A paper that I co-authored has just been accepted to a journal. Should I wait for the "In Press" citation, or may I send an update letter and include the name of the article and the journal with a brief summary? The paper isn't searchable yet and it may be 2-3 more weeks before there's any way to reference it.

Now that it's accepted i think you can send it. You don't want to wait too long to the point where your update is too late to make a difference. Maybe include what the citation will likely be and mention it'll be a few weeks before it's in press.

You can already cite it as In Press.

Author A, Author B, Author C. Name of Paper. Journal. In Press.

You don't need to wait for the e-pub date or for any pagination, just send an update that you've had a paper accepted with the above citation style. It'll be e-published by the time you would interview and they can find it in pubmed off the article name by then if they are so inclined.

Draft a thoughtfully written letter with at least 2 updates (including this one) and send it to your contacts at individual schools (you should have an excel sheet with a member of the staff that you regularly communicate with)

Most schools have an upload tab on the applicant portal for these updates with specifics on file type and size, others ask them to be emailed to admissions.
