A school I interviewed at recently strongly encourages updates. That's great, except I don't have anything noteworthy to update.

I work 6-day, 60 hour weeks in a non-medical field. I have bills to pay before I can start medical school. I also have a few other small commitments that make it impossible for me to also be researching, volunteering more than a few times during the fall, or anything else that improves my application. I have a lot of responsibility, etc.

Should I forego an update? Use the space as a letter of interest (I dearly love this school)? I don't see how I can phrase "need to pay bills" that doesn't sound like making an excuse, regardless of how true it is.

Thoughts? Anybody have a similar situation? Thanks in advance.

Why would you update a school that you have nothing to update??

C'mon, use your brain.

Fair, and that was my plan before hearing the request for updates. I am wary of showing a lack of relative interest, however. This is why I'm crowdsourcing advice and experience to make the most of the situation rather than twiddling my thumbs. If I'm stuck, well....I'm stuck.

Cincinnati

I would look in the school specific discussions thread to see if it's an optional thing or an "optional" thing. If it's truly optional, either don't send anything or send a "Hi Cincinnati, yes I'm still interested in your school, I've still been working here - this is what I've accomplished at work". If it's "optional", then send that email.

But look here (2016-2017 University of Cincinnati Application Thread) first to see how optional it is.

Thank you.

Unless they've changed their policy in the last year, it's definitely optional. I go to Cincinnati and never sent them an update letter after my interview.

Appreciate you taking the time to answer this. Enjoy your break!
