Well, it's getting closer to the end of fall semester and I'm still pre-interview at 5 schools. I'd like to send an update letter/letter of interest but I'm not sure when the best time to send it would be. Should I wait until I get my grades and send it in the beginning of January? Or would that be too late and I should just send one now? Oh, and I might have a Nature Genetics pub to add to my file if I wait 😀. What do you guys think?

I'm wondering this too. 🙂 I'm pre-interview at my top choice. I'll have more to update if I wait until January for new grades and such. At the same time, I feel that's getting so late... I was thinking of just writing a letter of interest describing why I loved the school and how it was a good fit for me first.. and then doing a short update with grades later on. Thoughts?

There are no set rules about sending in update letters. It's fine to send one now and another in 6-8 weeks. Some will send them again in March/April. Besides your "good fit" and expression of interest comments, include an update on your pertinent EC hours, new projects, positions, etc.
