I was wondering if any of you OHSU students had any updates on the budget cut situation. I have read that some students in other schools have already received their fin. aid; is it unusual that we haven't yet? I plan on calling and asking but this being a holiday weekend I thought this might be an effective way of getting some info. quickly. Any updates or info you might have is appreciated.

P.S. any info on student insurance would help too, my wife and I are just now trying to find time to figure things out and plan out the next several months. what are the costs, what gets covered, etc...
Thanks

Hello!

The "mandatory" student insurance is a joke. The cost (in my opinion) is what you would have to pay for private insurance but with out the benefit of truly getting better than average coverage. O.H.S.U. should be embarrassed that their plan isn’t better than it is for making it mandatory and requiring a fee that is NOT a discount or a saving to their students. Basically you are paying premium price (retail) for an average plan. Large groups can negotiate better deals with insurance companies and it looks like some one dropped the ball to me. (I have a sister who works for BC/BS insurance, and have dealt with insurance companies and how they put plans together for employers/colleges.) I have already called them on the requirements to opt out of this ridiculously expensive coverage as my husband already has a better plan. I have had better private insurance and paid less. O.H.S.U. has gone to great lengths this year (where they didn’t before) to make sure very few can opt-out of this mandatory fee. As in you must have: A group plan (no private insurance exempted), and other mandatory requirements. (See their student health website.)

As far as the tuition increase goes I got an email with an "estimated" amount. This figure is still better than what we were originally told, which was they were going to raise in-stators to out-stators rates. That would have been insane, not to mention total BS. Over some 200% increase for in-stators, can you imagine????

Anyway, if you are accepted there, you should have received an e-mail stating the alleged new cost estimate. Personally, with OR 8-10% personal state income tax and our high property taxes (for home owner like myself) I find it a raw deal to attend our state school. If you are an out of stator than the fee to come to O.H.S.U. isn't really that bad compared to other private institutions, so in the end, even with them ripping a huge whole in our bank accounts I suppose we will still come out ahead. It is just extremely frustrating how they are going about it.

Does anyone else know anything more?
