I'm just wondering if anyone in this forum goes to UPEI or Guelph (OVC), and if so, what do they think of it? I have to choose where I want to live so I can get residency in the right province.

Any tips?

well, AVC is easier to get into simply due to the fact that there are far fewer applicants than at OVC.

I cant comment on either of the programs though since i'm at WCVM.

I'm doing my undergrad at Guelph and I will apply to OVC in the next couple of years. (I don't know anything about UPEI though). I know there are some OVC students on here who will be able to help you more than I will.

I love U of G - Guelph is an awesome place to live and the school is very good. And OVC is very well-reputed, of course. There's a lot of research going on, and they have a pretty busy VTH.

Here is admission stats for 2010 (there is 2011 up somewhere but I can't find it right now, sorry)

Depending on how much of your undergrad you have done, I would speak with someone at OVC to see if you've done all required courses...they are SUPER picky with their requirements for U of G students, I would guess it is similar for people from other schools.

Thanks guys.

So, Guelph is a great place to live? I've visited the UPEI campus and didn't love it. But I'll only get to check Guelph out later.

Lots of dog parks? And off-leash nature areas (legal or not!)?

My SO and I can handle anything as long as we can hike it out sometimes!

Yep! There's parks everywhere- all different sizes. Lots of room for off-leash too. The U of G campus has a huge arboretum too... http://www.uoguelph.ca/arboretum/ I like to run there but lots of people walk dogs.

The city just has a really nice atmosphere...it's big enough to have everything you need close by, but small enough that you still feel you are very close to rural areas (which you are). Housing is pretty easy to find - especially at the beginning of January. Let me know if you have any more questions 🙂

Thanks! That makes me excited and motivated to organize a trip to go see Guelph myself.

We like the whole rural feel, so that's a big plus.

Why is housing available in Jan??? I would think May or Aug when school's out, no?

Housing is available in January because that is when all of the students look for houses and sign leases for the next year. Contracts typically run May-April. (Summer semester is May-August, Fall is September-December , Winter is January-April). Landlords selling their houses put them on the market around the end of December. You can still find places to lease/buy year round, of course, but January is when there's the most changeover.

I would think it's similar to other university towns but I don't really know!

I am a second year student at the OVC. So far I have been very happy with my education. I think that it is a great school and offers students many opportunities. As mentioned it is very competitive. The stats for the 2011 class can be found at this link : http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/admissions/dvm/documents/DVMF07Statistics.pdf

Another good source of info is the future vets website/forum: http://fvc.proboards38.com/index.cgi

If you have any specific questions, I would love to answer them🙂

Hey, thanks a lot. I'm going to be going for a tour soonish, and then will probably have tons of questions.

I want the run down after the tour! 😀

Hey Poke,

I had the OVC tour and it was really interesting. PM me if you want details!
