Hey question for bassdominator or anyone else starting as a ca-1 this june at upenn. What exactly is the deal with paying us for some overnight call? I seem to remember this mentioned during the interview, but I forget now.

I wish I could remember myself. Moonlighting wasn't a key deciding factor for me, so I didn't pay much attention. What I vaguely remember, is that there's a sign up sheet for extra hours with pay by the hour. Anyone else have a better memory?

We have this thing called "ECC"
Five people get paid extra cash for finishing cases that are running after 5:30. $75 for the first hour and $50 each half hour after that. It's totally voluntary, you get assigned when the call schedule is out, but then are free to give them away, or sign up for more if you want.
Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the info. So how long after 5:30pm do you usually stay when you're doing ECC? So do they help out the on-call on team or something? And jsut real quick, what's the call schedule again over there?

ECC can vary greatly, depending on the OR schedule, I'd guess a typical ECC would be until 6:30 or 7:00, but that is just a guess, I have been there much later, and left earlier. There have even been days when the ECC people weren't needed. The whole point of us staying, is to stay until the number of rooms running can be managed by the call team and the late-stay team. The number of late-stay has recently been decreased to a team of two from four. So I think there will be a trend for ECC people to stay later, which can be good or bad, depending on your own point of view.

There is also no set q4, q5, etc for the main OR, typically on call 3-4 times a month on average, which is VERY reasonable. Rotations like OB, Cardiac, Critical Care, have their own schedule.
