Hi, congratulations to all of you that are going to upenn. You could not have picked a better school. I am a first year right now but am going to be taking a leave of absence next year so i will be joining your class. I have been reading some of your posts and thought i would try to help with some questions. Seems like housing is a big questions. Here's some advice.
Things I wished I would have known before I got housing
1.) Live close to campus, as close as possible. You will be spending the majority of your time there and will be going back and forth. Espeically second semester.
2.)Pay the extra money to live close and to get a decent place. Many of my classmates (myself included) tried to save a few dollars and get a place farther away and a place not so nice. People end up with mice and other great pets. (i am not trying to scare you, there are good places but there are bad places as well)
3.) On Campus housing. I did not live on campus, glad I did not. Most students that did wished they did not, the places are very small not so nice. Some people did not mind it. Sansom place is okay, if you get your own place its $900. It is still about 15 minutes to school.
4.) This year it is going to be harder to get a decent place at a good pirce. All the prices have gone up. I would look for place kind of early.
5.)Get to philadelphia early. I cannot stress this enough. Dental school starts from day one(thats right be ready to open those books from the start), and you don't have much free time to get the little things done like set up your apartment, get use to the city, etc.
I live a good fifteen minute walk away from school and i wished i would live closer. So i got a place that's about five minutes from the school and the grocery store to live next year. Since I am not going to be here next year I just put it in the paper to get rented. If any of you dental students want it I would of course rather give it to a future classmate. The place really is in the best location and is very nice. There are lots of other dental students that live in the building to so it would be nice to have them around for questions. It also has the best security of any building in the area.
The rent is $985, if anyone is interested please let me know asap so i don't rent it out to anyone else, this building is very popular and never has any open apartments so it will probably go fast.
If you guys have any questions about anything please feel free to ask. Good luck with everything!
