UPENN Class of 2008 Highest GPA in history

^^i guess i understand now why they rejected me. [gripe] they really need to diffrentiate for people who are attending hard schools and/or took a hard major. [/gripe] unless if i only stayed home and studied all day, a biomedical engineer route in a top 20 school just doesn't translate into a gpa of 3.6

As an aside, I'd say that nearly EVERY school has the highest GPA in the history of their respective schools this year.

yep, we got a big lecture about we're the smartest the school has ever seen and how nationwide the profession is becoming much more difficult to get into.

high gpa correlates to smartness? woohoo!

Grade inflation, anyone? 🙄

party time 🙄

and is medicine getting easier or harder to get into?

I've always thought medicine as a whole was easier to get into when you consider DOs (you can retake a bad class and eliminate the poor grade from the GPA calculation) and FMGs. Dentistry doesn't really have these options.

Does anyone else find it sad that Penn blatently posted their GPA on their main page? At least don't display it and let those who are interested read a short article from admissions to find the actual number. I just find it remarkable that Penn as an institution would derive that much satisfaction from what the GPA of their entering class is.

Hey,

What is the average GPA of your class at UT memphis?

Thats only up .05 from last years averages

"The mean overall G.P.A. for the class that entered August 2003 was 3.53. The mean science G.P.A. was 3.46. The mean DAT academic average was 20, the mean DAT PAT average was 17, the mean DAT reading comprehension average was 20, and the mean DAT total science average was 19."

Not in my case - I worked darn hard for those grades and scores.
Not saying you didn't, by any means (so did I)! It was just a general commentary on how (compared to 20 years ago, for example) some ppl can work less hard and still look stellar on paper. It doesn't work in the reverse direction, where if you do look stellar on paper then that means you didn't work hard.

Looking back at that post of mine it really does look kinda schmucky & derogatory, though. Sorry! 😳

Look closely at all of these stats:
http://www.dental.upenn.edu/academic/DMDprogram/dmd-facts.html

What I find funny is that they have an average gpa of 3.59, and their average "academic average" is only 20. In my opinion those two numbers don't correspond. I would've expected a much higher average academic average. And that average PAT is super-low.

Then look at harvard, which has some stats from 2002. GPA of 3.7, average academic average of 22.2. Now that makes more sense.

I don't know what I'm trying to say here, I just think it's weird.

I think he was referring to how high the GPA was.

I understand what you are saying. Their statement, at the most basic level, is about salesmenship and bragging rights.
