Is there anyone who gets Dean's scholarship from Penn?
Does Penn actually start distributing Dean's scholarships???
Can you tell me any info about the dean's scholarship?

its half price tuition given to 16 people (i think). at my interview they said you should have a 3.85 to even be considered for it. as far as i know, those who get the scholarship find out when they get accepted.

I just came back from a Penn interview. I was told 25 awards are given and the cut-off last year was 3.75 for consideration. I'm sure this changes year to year depending on funding and the composition of the applicant pool.

DAT not important?

They look at the application as a whole. A UPenn 4th year said that one of his friends with a 29DAT didn't get the award while another person with a 17 got the award. They look at the balance between GPA, DAT, community service, leadership roles, the interview, etc etc etc.

hmm... sounds shady.

I don't know. I mean, if the 17DAT was the only thing that was low in the application and everything else was perfect while the 29DAT had nothing on their application except good grades and a high DAT score than I don't see how shady it is.

However! I will grant you that they didn't give us any more information than that and some of the dental students were saying that even they didn't completely understand how the committee decided who got the award.

too many things to consider. At Harvard Med, the MSTP students typically have 11-12 verbals, except for this one hispanic guy with a 6 verbal.

Though the people who received the Dean's Scholarship are notified when they receive their acceptance letters, if they choose to not attend Penn the scholarships are recycled and distributed to the "runners-up." So there will always be the 20-25 or however many they give out, even if they don't go to the original recipients.

I had a 3.84 and wasn't offered one (though I withdrew my acceptance before I found out if I was in the running for any recycled ones.) So though there's probably a cutoff, there are lots of factors involved....wish I knew what they were! 😉 I do remember that a lot of the people I spoke with who got it were minorities or had done research. So that may play a factor...

It's a helluva lot of money though! Comes out to around 80K.

Hey everybody, my parents just called me and said I got a Penn letter. They also told me it said something about a scholarship, but it did not mention the word "Dean." Do the Dean's Scholarship kiddies have the exact scholarship name in the letter?

[EDIT]
Nevermind, my parents can't read. They just called me again and said the letter says half tuition.

For those of you that have been accepted at UPenn and recieved a letter by mail, what state do you guys live in / what state was the letter sent to? Thanks alot.

damn, in her drawer. your posts are all over this forum and you seem to be gettin much love, you must have had a sweeet application... RESPECT.

It's this time of the yr again 🙂 Congrats to ppl who got accepted, good luck to the ppl who're still waiting.

I know last year UPenn's acceptance letter comes with the notification of the Dean's Scholarship. So it was a huge yellow heavy packet with all kinds of paperwork. It does specifically say on at least 3 forms/letters as "Dean's Scholarship" and you're accepted as "Dean's Scholar."

I don't know much about the cutoff or requirement, but you can definitely get it without being minority, which I don't think plays a big role. A little research might help.

I just got my letter from upenn, but no sign of any kind of scholarship, that sucks ! I thought I was going to get one ... oh well

I thought I was going to get one too!
But no sign of scholarship...

Cool! I got mine today!

Macko, I noticed you picked Harvard on Pre-Dents.com as the school you're attending. Did today's scholarship change your mind? I must admit, I don't know how easily I could rationalize turning down this scholarship.

Could you please turn down your scholarship sooner and tell them to give it Goddess.😍 I really wanna go there but I want that scholarship😍

in her drawer......take harvard and save the scholarship for pple like me who didnt apply to harvard! Even with the scholarship, the difference in price will not be so significant and at harvard you are pretty much guaranteed a specialty! I dont know who would turn down harvard for anything....

in her drawer...do you mind me asking what your dat score and gpa was?

Yeah, no prob. My GPA is 3.85 (cum, sci, and BCP). My DAT was 22/21/17.

hey everyone, i too was accepted to harvard and received the dean's scholarship from upenn. i got the call from harvard on friday and got the call from my mother at home on sunday about upenn, so now i am at least considering upenn. any first reactions about harvard (65k/yr) vs penn with dean's (50k/yr)?? candid advice is always welcomed.
my numbers and such are 3.88, 22/21/22, i will have done research for 5 semesters by the time i graduate but i did not get published (it was not the highlight of my application), but i did do lots of community service here and abroad.
the dean's letter came in the same envelope as the acceptance letter, tho we only have til the 21st to accept the offer, not very much time.

good luck to all,

-a

it depends....if an extra 15 grand a yr is worth a guaranteed spot in a specialty to you.....then choose Harvard. If you want to risk it, choose penn. Either way, let them know soon for my sake and everyone elses who have above a 3.8 and had an interview the second wave at penn (and who didnt apply to Harvard).

I just found out I recieved the scholarship. 3.93 GPA, 22/22/20. PM or ask if you want more info. Good luck.
