UPENN or NOVA??

Hey everyone, UPenn and NOVA are my two accepted schools so far. I'd like to hear all reasons for or against... I'm from the west coast, so the idea of living in a cold weather city like Philly is completely foreign to me, but other than that I loved UPenn and its program.

NOVA is about $10k cheaper per year. I also thought this campus was amazing, and the faculty were so nice.

I would choose UPENN over Nova basically because it is a better school in both academic and clinic. With Nova, you have to worry about not getting lots of patients, and you have to compete for a chair in clinic since there are only 90 or something chairs only for 105(or more )spots.

UPENN definitiely has a better reputation, but you have to go with what you feel fits the best.

I would go to UPenn, only because I hate south florida.

I had the same situation. For me it was a little easier because I'm a Florida resident. Penn amounted to over 320,000 over four years while Nova for me would only cost about 180,000. A 140,000 dollar difference really helps out. I mean it all depends on what you are looking for in a school if the expenses are pretty much a wash. Nova is in residential area and is getting better every year. Penn has a longer history and carries a little extra with its famous name.

but they also have that new clinical area in miami, too. The chair thing isn't a big deal. I loved both schools, personally. I'd probably pick based on the location/cost in this situation. Where do you want to be for the next four years. Ft. Lauderdale and Philadelphia are definitely totally different atmospheres.

You can do it if you want, only if 1000$ isnt a big of deal for you. I would put down the deposit just to have more option later. Goodluck.

Room: 1,500/month x12 =18,000

I though its about 60,000 without living expense.

The budget sheet they handed out on the interview day said it. Again, rent was factored into the budget, but individual living expenses were not.

go where you are going to be happy. the last thing you want to do is be in a place where you will be miserable on top of having a tough class schedule for 4 years (duh). location is a very big factor in deciding which school is best for you, not just the prestige of an ivy league name or bragging rights at the bar.

as for me, i am from northern california (almost oregon), and did undergrad at penn state, so i will hopefully be going somewhere warm... where the beer flows like wine and the beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of capistrano. actually i'm really hoping for a spot to open up at Nova so I can get off the waitlist 😀 but if not, I interview in Arizona next week 👍

Im gonna say Upenn all the way! Besides its amazing reputation, Philly is a great city with a lot to offer. I spent many years living in FL and trust me - it's not all that it's made out to be. Its a great place to retire, absolutely, but trust me, seeing thousands of old people wherever you go gets to be quite depressing. FL is aka G-ds waiting room - nuff said! Sure the weather is good - but that's why you go there to retire and go to the beach and play golf. At this stage of our lives we are able to do other things so why not embrace it!

Seriously though, dont go to Nova based on its location. I realize how it may appear glorious at first, but when you get used to it you will realize that it's not quite what you were expecting. Not to mention the fact that Nova has seating issues in both lectures and clinics - not cool!

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the input. Alexandra called me today; I decided to pass on my seat at Nova without putting down a deposit. It was a hard decision to make, but after discussing it with my dad, an additional $10k per year is insignificant when thinking in the long-term. I think PENN will be a better fit for me and my future goals.

So there's one more spot open for those hoping to get in. Best of luck to everyone!

I feel the opposite. I've lived in Florida as well through middle school, high school, and college, and I love it here. In fact, this is where I plan to set up my practice. It all depends, South Florida does have a lot of old people, but that's a given. I just like the suburban atmosphere as opposed to the big city atmosphere of Philly. Philadelphia is little too ghetto for my tastes, but also have some beauty to it. Eh, just my two cents.
