UPenn Post Bacc Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello,

I'm also looking for housing in the fall, I'm enrolled in SSP. PM me if there are any persons looking for a male roommate, If you already have a house and just need a roommate and/or if you wanna get together and rent out a place 2 or 3 persons.

Congrats to all fall acceptances.

Just checked - I got in!! 😀

Just checked too! got in! lol ill need to find a place to LIVE! but the hardest part is deciding between philly or boston! Im 80-20 leaning toward philly!!

anyone looking for roomates? i mean i may wanna do studio but...
Jia - u were in my interview? congratz!

audman - congrats! 🙂 nope, i opted for a phone interview! which program in boston are you 20% for? i'll be looking for a roommate once I make a decision. =) i am deciding b/w penn and barry... i think it will mostly be penn but I am not too sure yet. gotta work on that pro/con list!

yeh... pro/con list. haha good luck on that 😉

question to all- does anyone know where i can get acceptance rate to med school from these programs? I know UPenn is 95 % acceptance rate from program and program size is 50-70... but I wanna know for HES (bostoN)?

thanks

I found out I got in today too ...very excited...I was wondering if anyone has any advice about living on or off campus???

I am in Philly right now. Staying near Chinatown in Center City.

I am leaving for back home tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. Btw, I am in the special sciences program, and I am a guy (22 yr old). No smoking, drinking, drugging, annoyingness here or wanted.

I NEED TO FIND AN APARTMENT BY THEN. And I have been looking forever and everything is just **** for 1 bedrooms and studios.

So if you are interested in rooming with me and you are in town, please message me back ASAP. Below are some 2 bedroom places I found and am interested in. Rates are for the whole room (aka you will pay half) and for 9 month lease (which is the only type of lease i am interested in).

Lofts 640: Only one 2 bedroom available Sep 12; Rent is $1790 and inc. 1 garage space; 3rd floor; Floorplan F; inc. water, sewer, trash, and cable

-1835 Arch: $2089 + util + parking ($260/month)

-The Glen at Shawmont (suburb): Couldn't get in contact with them but website says ~$1600 + util

-Chocolate Works: $1995) inc. water + other util + $160 for lot parking

Please feel free to find our own possible place

Message me back by tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at latest. Damn, this sucks.

Btw, we would have to rent or buy our own furniture.

Are you in the special science program or the pre-health (basically none of the pre-reqs) program?
If you are in SSP, HES makes no sense for you - they told myself and another member that we'd be wasting our time going to HES as we'd already done too many upper level classes. They then recommended UPenn and BU MAMS instead of their program.
Just a thought

Hey rob! thanks! for both of your replies to both posts! as you can see i am desperate for some input.

I am not SSP. I am pre-health. I have no science background - except ONE: Intro to Chem I to fulfill my lab/general education requirement.

I've posted on the other post with more detail but I don't know if philly is that good enough to justify the huge cost difference. I understand it has better advising, perhaps better acceptance rate (is this true?)

does one have a better reputation of getting students into med school?

do any of you know if penn has any linkages to dental schools? i can't access the linkages link on the penn website as it needs a pennkey but i read in this thread that they do have linkages to few medical schools. thanks!

EDIT: I called them and for anyone that wants to know - they said they have a linkage available to Nova.

whats the next step after filling out the intent to enroll form?

You need to get a Pennkey, complete the immunization forms and register for classes. I think those three things are the 'must-do' items. Hopefully I'm not missing anything here, cause that's all I did 😛

Just double-checked, the pennkey setup code should be automatically sent to you via snail mail after you return the intent to enroll form (http://www.sas.upenn.edu/lps/pre-health/current/matriculating). You might want to reconfirm the address that it's being sent to though if you don't receive the setup code within a week or two... I ended up waiting for over a month for mine before figuring out that my code was being sent to the wrong address 😳 (you know how the application's "current address" space had a 'valid until' date? Well apparently they ignore it and continue sending stuff to an outdated address anyways lol).

And this name kind of just popped up randomly one day; it just felt like a fun and silly word to say 🙂.

I dont think you will have your pennkey stuff on Monday if you sent in the letter on Saturday. Maybe a week Monday...

If memory serves me correctly, you need to have your pennkey before you're able to register for classes. If you know the course ids of the classes you want to take, you could try emailing [email protected] directly to see if they'll add it manually for you; they offered to do that for me when I was having trouble receiving my pennkey. Good luck!

Hey guys, two unrelated questions.

1. I got my pennkey and I did all the things on the 'must do' list. Do we not also get a upenn email account? Maybe I made that up b/c I cannot for the life of my find how to set it up.

2. About finding jobs, I've done about 100 hours of clinical volunteering throughout undergrad as well as 3 yrs of clinical psych research. Does it matter whether I apply for clinical or research positions? If I continue with a research job, should I still be volunteering so that I am technically continuing my connection with clinical stuff, or would research count?? :help:

I appreciate your help!

I am still without a pennkey... can someone who has one make a list of what classes are filled up already? This is really frustrating...

runaround; there are hundreds of classes offered - its not really practical. Call the office tomorrow

Srivastik - im not really sure what your 2nd Q is asking.

1. You do get a student account, but it is usually linked to whatever e-mail one has previously. For example, I have an address for Penn, but everything sent to that address is forwarded to my yahoo account. I believe this is the same for everyone, but I could be wrong.

2. My advisor had mentioned you can do a research job or volunteer. You must do something while attending classes. There are some clinical research jobs through Penn that might be interesting to you. I would think that as long as you show in your med school application that you have experienced both sides of medicine you should be fine.

I think doing both would be your best bet, if it is possible in your schedule. I am going to be doing both this year. I have a job in research, but I will also be volunteering at the VA and HUP. Hope this helps you out.

whoops, sorry. I'm still new to this.

Sorry for being confusing. Basically, will a research position as my part time job count as "clinical work." I have clinical volunteer experience from undergrad, however, I have more research experience so it would be easier for me to get a research position.

I want to know the advantage/disadvantage over either position b/c I will only have time for one.

Hope that makes sense now.

Hey guys! So it seems i have decided this over other programs.

FOR all incoming students for the CORE studies... shoot me a PM with email so i can try to set up and organize some sort of study group!

see ya all sooN!

o cool whats the group name? btw i can't join till i get pennkey to be on the penn network...

btw just came back today from apt hunting in univ city. my rents wants me to do domus or stratum.

anyone whos living in domus looking to fill third or second bedroom? or anyone willing to live in domus with me? one other person or two other people? to fill 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom apts there (respectively)?

thanks!

yeh am aware. but rents are paying for it so they want me to live where they want me to live lol

but in reality, 3 bedroom works out to be 1300 a person. 1500 for 2 bedroom. I do think it is unnecessary to live in domus... I do however like the stratum... any feedbacks on that? anyone living there now in this program?

To those of you who have spoken to Sally Cardy about classes, when is the best time to contact her?

I've been calling for about a week, and always get voicemail. I left 2, but she never answered. I need to register for classes!🙁

The package offered at Stratum was really appealing to me too, until I found out that a single room's square footage was only "about 200." Seems a bit small for something that costs $1500 a month. It could still be a good deal though, if you intend on eating at their cafeteria for all 3 meals every day.

I thought those places were a rip off. Im paying $850 for a decent sized one bedroom with free shuttle to campus thru the apartment company.

$1500 for 200 sq feet is ridic

yeh stratum seems a little too much of a rip off. but they are having a sale for single for 1250... and double which is the stupidest thing for 850. I say its stupid because its like a dorm... one big space and a bathroom... no privacy.

anyways, but i do like the domus. lol who can't like it there?
i want to find someone who wants to do a two bedroom? approx 1600 (master) and 1400 (other bedroom)?

since i am desperate and understand that it may not be possible who is willing to spend that much at this point in time, i think we could turn a one bedroom into two with the living room... i have friends who does that in NYC apt. it works well. obviously, all youd pay is 600/mo

let me know

In my experience, between 9 and 11 A.M. Eastern is a good time to reach her.

To anyone enrolled in biological basis of psychiatric disorders or clinical psychopharmacology - when did you sign up? I'm a bit upset that classes here can be closed already considering people were still being admitted a week ago and it takes another full week to receive a pennkey!

Cant help you out SoFreakedOut - i have a sunday night shift

Well, thanks for responding anyway RobFlanker. Guess you're missing Sunday night football this season.

For those of you having trouble understanding the emailing system:

First, setup and register your PennKey: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey/register/index.html

If you choose to have your [email protected] mailbox be an existing mailbox (such as your yahoo account) then continue to setting up your email (notice that even if it's forwarded to yahoo your email address is still [email protected], yahoo is just your storage unit):
http://email.sas.upenn.edu/configure/

If you want to have a new, separate mailbox for your Penn email, set up your Penn Live mailbox first:
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/help/pennlive/welcome

You'll go through a temporary password being sent to you, logging in with it, and then going to the following site to set up your email and have it sent to the new mailbox you've created:
http://email.sas.upenn.edu/configure/

That's the process if my memory serves me right. You may also be able to set up a Penn Live account straight from the Penn email page (http://email.sas.upenn.edu/configure/)

Here's an FAQ link about Penn Live should you still be confused:
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/help/pennlive/#what_is_penn_live

I'm not gonna lie dude but you were very late in applying. So, what did you expect? It sucks, im not gonna lie but if you apply late, you kinda gotta expect that you miss out on somethings

Well, I'm not going to lie to you either, dude. We are all paying the same ridiculous amount of money to take these courses. Therefore, we should all have equal access to classes. Classes closing to registration before we even are admitted to the program is pretty preposterous. It is the LPS's duty to keep classes open to people until after all the admissions are done with. If they knew classes were going to fill up quickly, they should not have had such late application deadlines. I mean it is not like there is a plethora of classes to choose from! (like ten total classes!!!) Plus, you have no idea why some people applied late, yet you assume it was of his own volition/choice-- not necessarily true.

Luckily, I am already signed up for all the classes I want to take, but I felt like I had to say something based on the tone coming across from your post.

No offense dude, but I am really hoping that the people in the Pre-Health program are cool. Unfortunately, I am not getting that vibe now.

Refugee: If you know what classes you want and they are full, explain the situation to Dr. Ukachukwu -she might be able to help you out. I know because histo was closed in mid june but she overrode the system and got me into the class. It's def worth a try to get the ones you're interested in. Hope it works out.
-Dendrite10

Refugee - there are more than 10 classes. I think you should review your course catalog again. Dendrite makes a good point.

Also, I believe the initial deadline passed and they extended it for reasons unknown, but it appears they did not change the registration policy. I believe this shows they did something to offer students an opportunity to attend UPenn, but maybe they couldnt change the registration protocols.

No offense? Everytime you come in here you are rude, condescending, negative and believe you know more than everyone else. I personally am excited to start as some of the members who have posted in this thread a while have really interesting and diverse backgrounds. It sounds like its a shame you didnt attend HES

on a brighter note, anyone (male) looking for a room mate? pm me!
