UPenn Post Bacc Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I have a glass at 6.30, and the instructor made the deal that if you missed the first Thursday class to come to his, then he'd let you get out and go to all the other classes.

Hey everyone. Congrats on getting in the program.
Two things:
1) For those interested in finding employment, this is the primary website you should use. It posts on-campus as well as off-campus positions in everything from research to tutoring to babysitting for professors.

2) I was in the Clinical Research course last semester. Class didn't meet every week...sometimes we'd go a month without meeting. Also, sometimes the class would meet at 2pm instead. I think I had histo at 6:30 and it worked out fine (a lil' tight though). If there are ever conflicts, just talk to your professors - they understand! I'm not sure about having a 5pm class though...I think all meeting are at least an hour long. Your best bet is to contact him.

Best wishes!

The Clinical Research in Emergency Medicine course is listed under Biological Basis of Behavior. Does anyone know if this counts towards your science GPA?

just want to wish everyone going up to Philly this fall the best of luck, I've decided to stay at home and work/travel instead of coming to the program, knock em dead guys

For anyone that has completed the introductory courses i.e. bio, chem, & phys....how difficult were the courses? Was it extremely "cut-throat" as I have heard in the past? I am attempting to gauge what I could possibly be getting myself into, so all knowledge of this program would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

yo im in the same boat bro. idk what the competition is going to be like. lol
but i know imma be throwing a party to get to know ppl in the program sometime before classes, whenever i can move in, hopefully saturday. haha

also, to those who completed the course, or who know more about it than I, I got a question.
I'm thinking of doing a club sport... Should I? or is it going to be interfering with the program? I'm an active and social person, I can't be in the library all day 24/7 lol as much as i would like to, it will actually be destructive to me. lol any advice? yes/no to club sports?

anyone know anything about microbiology?

anyone in just intro to chem I and bio I? are there any updates? like no syllabus has been posted on blackboard right?

I am in Chem I and Bio I. I received an e-mail from the Chem professor today. He had a lot of information on the class/syllabus, which are now posted on Blackboard. I have yet to hear or see anything from the Bio professor.

Same situation here

hmm interesting you guys got emails. I havent had anything yet. I even emailed the histo professor about something and never got a response.

anyone going to orientation tomorrow? I might, but we'll see how the unpacking situation is

I will be going tomorrow; I don't have much to do before classes start anyways. On a side note, I'm really surprised at how nice the campus looks. Everything is so convenient here 😀

I will be attending the orientation tomorrow as well. The campus is very nice. It has a lot of older, yet beautifully constructed buildings. It is easier to navigate than I thought it would be, too. After seeing all of the students moving into the Quad today while walking to HUP, I started to get excited about school.

On what campus are the classes held?

There is more than one campus?....

Regarding Orientation - i might try and make it; gotta do the fun of getting IDs from CHOP and a university ID and still gotta keep unpacking. We shall see. Just not sure what they are going to tell us and how useful it is going to be. Oh well - we'll see how productive the morning of IDs and paperwork goes

I didn't know if there were classes held at 3440.... disregard my original comment.

Good luck to you too. Hope everything's okay. Sorry to see you won't be coming anymore, seems like you applied on the earlier side too.

Hi everyone,

I'd appreciate any and all advice you have on trying to get a part-time health care related job as a UPenn postbacc student.

I've applied for over a dozen jobs (between CHOP, HUP, and UPenn student employment) and no job yet. I would prefer a patient care rep jobs or mental health tech, but no luck with that. I also have over 3 years of clinical research experience and still no luck with a research position :annoyed:.

I'm pretty frustrated, confused, and at this point desperate for a job, so I'd appreciate any insight you have for me. Thanks so much.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone that was doing the seminar on Fridays has a copy of the dates as well as topics for the seminars. I may have deleted the e-mail by accident. If anyone has it, can they either post it, pm me, or whatever? Thank You!!

I just started looking for a job last week at the SEO site. Still no replies, but it's only been a few days for me.

If you don't mind me asking, do you apply to multiple jobs at the same time? Or do you wait for a response before you try applying to another place? And has anyone figured out where the volunteering site is? The link from the Post Bac Society site is broken. Thanks!

Edit: Oh and ali, were you referring to the two extra Chem lectures on Friday the 18th and the 25th? Or is this something else altogether?

Nuggles, these are two links from the Penn Post Bac Society e-mail that you may be interested in. For other things to volunteer in there are some under the current student section from the pre-health page.

Homeless Health Initiative: http://www.chop.edu/consumer/jsp/division/generic.jsp?id=83382

HUP Pre Med Program as well as volunteering:
http://www.pennhealth.com/hup/vi_files/volunteer/

As for the seminar, I was referring to a seminar that is on Friday evenings that provides information for pre-health students. Some are going to focus on linkages to med schools, while others have to do with topics in Healthcare/Medicine. It is a free extra seminar, which one had to return a form to be a part of in the fall. An e-mail was sent out that had the registration form as well as the schedule/dates of the topics. I was looking to see if anyone had the schedule part for the seminar.

I have all of the chemistry stuff because it was on blackboard, but thank you anyway.

Thanks for the info ali, I guess I was off by quite a bit! I also checked my email box and I couldn't find the original email you were referring to, I guess I must've deleted it as well.. Hopefully someone else has what you're looking for 🙂.

Ali - i never received that email either so I can't help you. It sounds interesting so I wish I had...

Thanks anyway guys! I actually did manage to find the print out of the schedule with some paperwork I had from work today. Somehow it got placed in the wrong folder. Oh well, thank you.

I asked Sally yesterday and it seems that it is still possible to attend the seminars even though the deadline for the registration has already passed. For those who are still looking, the schedule and registration forms are available at: http://www.sas.upenn.edu/lps/postbac/pre-health/current (last two options).

And thanks ali for bringing this up, I would've totally missed this if it wasn't for you! I'm glad you found your schedule too!

Eep, see message below (ignore this one)

I've been applying for one job at a time at the various hospitals. However, through student employment, I've been applying to as many as I can/qualify for at a time.

Any idea how many of these we have to make? I won't be able to make all of them due to travel commitments. Also, do we get any credit for this or is it purely optional/extra? Thanks

And thanks Nuggles for digging this up, I somehow missed this completely

This is an optional seminar for information about medical topics. I e-mailed Sally last week to ask about how many you have to go to because my chem professor added 2 extra classes on 2 separate fridays. She said that you can go to as many as you can make. She stressed the fact that it is informative as well as helpful to attend. You just have to let her know that you are interested in attending at least some of the meetings.

Thanks ali and srivastk. Also srivastk, if you don't mind me asking, how long does it usually take for people to email you back when you respond to their SEO ad (do they even bother emailing you back if you're not right for the job)? Thanks again

I've also applied for a lot of jobs with no luck. Some people don't respond and others have taken weeks to say the job is already filled. Such a crapshoot. But hopefully we'll all find something! Good luck to those starting class today!

I've applied to about 10-12 jobs through SEO and only received 1 response to tell me the job was filled. I was sent this email less than 5 hours after the job had even been posted on SEO... I thought I'd have an advantage applying really early but apparently I wasn't quick enough.

Thanks for the replies srivastk and runaround. 5 hours for a job to be filled, that's insane 😱

Is anyone;
a) Taking Histo?
and/or
b) Taking Histo and Clinical Research in EM?

Lol. I ran into this in the Spring. I think that what happens is an internal employee either gets the job or the current employee recommends a replacement, but for some response the job is required to publicly post the position (even if it's technically already filled).

Don't worry. I found my current job there (after contacting at least 20+ people claiming to have openings). It took a while, but with perseverance you will eventually find something.

Also, I'm going to the "seminars" this evening, the Jefferson linkage one just ended and it was well worth going...super candid discussion about the process and she actually gave numbers and as you're aware is rare for admissions people to typically do that. The presenter (Dr. Brooks) is actually on the adcom and meets with the post back linkage nominees (FYI). I've got some down time now before the clinical medicine talk, but just wanted to say it was a full house at the 4pm seminar, as it should have been as a helpful, very informative talk.

The second one was very informative, too. The presenter was funny. He made the session interesting with his personal experiences. If all of the seminars are going to be like this, then I will not mind spending my fridays going to them.

Same here, the seminar was definitely a treat.

Hey guys! I'm applying to the specialized science program. I just wanted to ask, were there people who applied during their senior year in college? I know they like it when you take a year off to work/volunteer. I am senior in college right now and I would really like to apply now!

Hey, many of us in the program just graduated in '09, so you should be fine!

I don't think there is a MCAT requirment (especially if you are pre-health) but GPA-wise, I believe its north of a 3.0

Yep, no MCAT requirement. I just submitted my app and I used my SAT scores. Does anyone know about how long it takes between application submission and an interview/rejection notification? Any email said up to 5 weeks, which is a pretty long time.
