Im having some trouble with the last question on UPENN's application.

What qualities of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine do you feel will help you achieve your professional
goals and how?

What does UPenn dental school pride themself on? I have heard something about the high rates of specialization amongst its student body, but is it appropriate to show concern for specialization this early in the game. I have been told its a bit pretentious. What other things do you think are worthy of mention? I read on the website that UPenn integrates a clinical dimension beginning in the first year of dental school, is that fairly unique?

i don't think it's pretentious, but some people on this forum will jump on you like it is. i don't see ANY problem with keeping your options opened, so no, i don't think it's too early to be thinking about specialising. i mean, you probably want a balance of research & clinics, and that is what attracted me to penn. i'm not there yet cuz i start in august, but that was the impression i got. if i wanted to specialise, being there may heighten my chances. if i decide it's not my thing later on, i'm not screwed either clinically.

When is UPENN's Secondary due? Did they contact you? or is it due immediately? thanks

It's not just about specializing. Basically, what Penn wants to know is: 1)have you researched the school and what do you know about it 2) Obviously you want to be a dentist, but what else do you want to do with your career - i.e. research, community service, politics, etc. 3) How do you think the school and its resources will further your education and help you advance your career? Penn does have a good specialization rate (I don't know what the latest figures are - sorry) and they do integrate preclinical training during the first year, however, Penn is not unique in either of these.

If you are genuinely interested in specializing I wouldn't make it the main thrust of your statement (to Penn or any school for that matter) but rather I would present your desire to specialize and why Penn by framing your discussion with how a school would be suited to helping you explore your options (e.g. not every dental school has specialty programs in house and not every school is as flexible with externships as they are). It's not that saying you want to specialize is so much pretentious as it is regarded as being mis-informed: as an applicant you have yet to survive dental school and once inside students often change their initial focus for a variety of reasons - although there are plenty of people that do enter dental school with a particular goal of specializing and achieve it. With that said I'm sure you can appreciate why the topic of specializing in the dental school application process can be a bit tricky. Best of luck!

Well, I got the brochure (the thing they mailed me) right here and they do have a bunch of cool selective courses that provides exposure to various clinical, business and FORENSIC stuff. Best of all... RESEARCH opportunties. BTW, is it hard to actually get involved in research at Penn, Sprgrover?? The more I read this, the more it interests me... until I see the tuition 😱

It's really easy to do research - all you have to have is an interest and no prior experience is required. Don't worry if you don't know what you want to do. In fact, many professors prefer that you come to them with no set agenda (i.e. a research proposal of your own - getting funding for such projects, the time alotted during the first summer, logistics, etc. often make such things very hard to accomplish) as they all have things going on in your lab. For example I'm doing research this summer in the biochem department on Type III collagen. I didn't have any prior experience and I just went to Dr. Adams, the chair of the department, and I told her I was interested in doing research with her and she helped me design an experiment that will augment an ongoing project of hers. If you're interested in doing research at Penn it is really easy to do.

Thanks for the input. Well I hope my supplementary app looks good in their eyes considering I spent 4 hours on it. I'm interested in the genetics stuff since my thesis project dealt with genes in E. coli and reading up on studies conducted at the school dealing with virulence factors really interested me.

does any one know how to type on the actual pdf file instead of doing it by hand?

you'll need adobe acrobat professional in order to edit any pdf...(if the pdf even allows for that..some are secured)

so any one who does not have the professional version is doing it by hand?

you could simply retype the questions and type your answers below...and attach an original copy of the application

that's what i did last year...

hey guys, im a bit new to the forum so i apologize if someone has asked this question before - i tried searching but couldnt find anything that answered my question. along the lines of the upenn supplemental (and all the others, in fact), how long, on average, should each response be? the directions say we can answer on that sheet of paper or attach additional pages, so i was just wondering what the average length was? thanks!

does any one really have any additional pre dent experience that they didn't list on AADSAS, but are planning to add on this app?

i think that i pretty much wrote everything i've done on AADSAS's different sections.

I typed my responses and mine were only as long as the space permitted.

Just list out the main points, I think, try not to write detail too much trough. I think given the spaces, they don't want to read too much..
